one of those things that sort of makes you understand how society is a communal effort that you have to opt into is realizing that if you don’t look obviously poor and don’t ever steal anything you can’t pay for, shoplifting is a risk free crime.

shoplifting is bad. cheating on your taxes is bad. smoking on the train is bad. not picking up your dog’s poop is bad.
we live in a society, act like it!
This is a fringe theory. The vast majority of scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus was a real person. Now whether you believe he was the messiah or son of God is purely up to you, but saying he didn't exist at all is pseudohistory.
Even if the historical Jesus didn't exist (he did and we have sufficient evidence), there's nothing so audaciously unlikely about the basic story that a guy introduced a new religion and then was executed for it; that was not at all outside of the tenor of the times.
The LPG problem does seem really bad and i would love to see an energy analyst tell me it can be figured out

I think LLMs drive people insane because there really is something about a piece of technology all but literally capable of looking you in the eye and lying to you. a gauge gives you the wrong value it's frustrating, claude saying "yes, that's a good idea. make the chlorine gas." is a betrayal
ah yeah, China, famously not using AI or facial recognition for any kind of surveillance
wait I thought this was bullshit? it was a real thing? or is Zuck dumb.
Some major ones:
The Strait of Malacca joining the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the busiest sea passage on Earth.
The Bab-el-Mandeb at the southern end of the Red Sea (this is what the Houthis blocked).
The Bosphorous and Dardanelles connecting the Med with the Black Sea.
The Taiwan Strait.
In the meantime India and Bangladesh are already rationing natural gas. The rest of SE Asia is just shitting bricks.
oh I used to explain Traditional Western Medicine to Chinese friends straight-facedly.
Following the 'ruled by 12 year olds' theory, these men genuinely think the rules-based international order is like their mum
The nagging shrill lady who won't let them do cool things like stick their heads in ovens, the cat's tail in electrical outlets, or play on train tracks
Islamic State angle is suspected regarding the attempted bombing of mayor Mamdani's residence in New York. Three explosives were found, two thrown from within a protester crowd, one in a car. One had TATP. #USA
I made the mistake of posting on X, but it is informative about the Culture War and its function, and how the ruling class uses young men. A short thread. First, my post. Note that flaws in the game industry itself are blamed on a single woman outside of the industry/
Ali Khamenei, despite his reputation, actually limited Iran in certain aspects to try to maintain the chance of relations with the west. It annoyed the IRGC deeply. Anyway, congrats to China, who will likely have, within five years, a treaty ally with its dagger at the throat of the global economy.
i invented a better version of fandom called posting about stuff you like
To be fair, "here is the war-winning superweapon we invented to win wars, all of our defense policy for fifty years was predicated on them, under no circumstances can you use one" is probably pretty hard to explain to a machine.
South Korean culture is fascinating because it's like "We make two things extremely well: Weapons and pop stars. One of these industries is the ruthless, blood-soaked byproduct of a nation whose soul was scarred by eternal war. The other is our defense industrial base, which is respected globally."
The difference between the KPop industry and the Korean People's Army is that the KPA is probably better fed and operates under more humane working conditions.
I'm sorry, but this is kind of crazy. The doctor is helping you because you need help. It is noble to help others. It is not ignoble to need help, but it's not inherently noble to need help. It's OK for people to feel good about helping.

Napoleon's ultimate success can be measured in the fact that his impact on the French population - and that impact was not a good one - was still evident at the start of the Great War.
Still, logistics are boring, right?
"Napoleon achieved his success by ignoring logistics" is a bold take when you consider that such successes include losing his entire army in Egypt due to logistics, losing his entire army in Russia due to logistics, turning the Peninsular War into a nightmare by replacing logistics with theft...
You may laugh, but the Macbeths are a much better role model for a marriage than Romeo and Juliet. They discuss their problems (killing the king of Scotland), share their hobbies (killing the king of Scotland), and resolve their conflicts (by killing the king of Scotland).
