Relaxing with Jane while we power up in the morning. Our solar energy, regardless of the weather, seems just endless. The best $12,000 we've ever spent. 😊

On Monday our instagram account was hacked and then deleted. We received a ransom note to recover it; obviously we couldn't and wouldn't pay, and therefore lost thousands of followers. Meta support was useless. But we're BACK with a new account: @littletollerbooks. Can you follow us there and share?

What's striking about capitalist civilization is that it has no real direction. There's no vision for social progress, no commitment to improving human welfare or ecology. All we get is the chaos of profit-oriented production and accumulation as the world burns around us.

No, AI Does Not Learn Like a Human, and This Is Why – Oisín McGann
I had a thread go viral here recently, breaking down why gen AI does not, and cannot, learn like a human. I've just written it up as a blog post for anyone who's interested.

We live in the world the Velvet Underground made. Taxi radio playing Boston's More Than A Feeling (riff is bastardisation of Sweet Jane) and Snow Patrol's Chocolate (like all the vampy 2000s band records its ancestor is Waiting For The Man).

Cheaper.
It strikes me that the reasons for not doing this whittle down to things like not wanting to help homeless people, or that this system isn't based on rentier capitalism, or both.

Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
