Gustave Baumann's grid-like depiction of the inside of a belltower, the bells seen in gray and black silhouette behind a complex pulley system depicted in gold ink. Baumann was a graphic designer and poster designer before he began pursuing printmaking as a fine art. His strong sense of depth and architectural detail is on full display in this color woodcut from 1948.

A colorful and minutely detailed color woodcut depicting two Chinese vases in deep cobalt blue resting on a glass case, a framed Japanese fan in the background. In the foreground a small postcard of an 18th century lady is taped to the front of the case and disappearing below the bottom edge of the composition. The work is done in shades of coral and turquoise ivory, red, leaf green, and cobalt details.

Sylvia Solochek Walters (American: contemporary): "La Grande Cascade," color reduction woodcut with gauffrage, 1983. "Reduction" refers to the cutting-away of the block by color from light to dark, rather than carving a block for each - a delicate dance!

A reduction color woodcut of a winter evening in the midwest, probably Minnesota. A snow-laden field plays host to bare deciduous trees and tall scrub bushes rendered in plum and purple. Scattered throughout are young evergreens. The lighting is soft and verging on dusk.

A striking, bold black and red linocut whose surface is deeply embossed, making it three dimensional in appearance when viewed up close. The work can be construed as Abstract Expressionist but is more Symbolist in nature, with a fractal layout in which each portion contains images of people, symbols such as stars, crosses, and moons, and a tree-filled landscape.

Tunde Odunlade (Nigerian: born 1954): "Artist and His Creations," color linocut with heavy embossing, 1990/91. Annotated "Ife," an ancient city in SW Nigeria considered the origin of all mankind in the Yoruba worldview. Odunlade is from Ibadan, Nigeria.

A color woodcut by Kawase Hasui from 1930, printed around around 1948. It is a nocturnal landscape printed in blues, grays, and black, featuring a large tree looming over an agricultural field, with a large yellow moon peeking out from behind the tree's branches. A small house sits in the lower right in silhouette, with one window lit in the same yellow as the moon.

A monochromatic lithograph on one large sheet of paper using three sequential images of a man lighting and smoking a pipe, from left to right. The man is in his middle years and has dark hair and a mustache. He wears a light turtleneck, dark pants and shoes, and black rimmed glasses. He smokes a pipe, from whose bowl a thin trail of smoke emerges in the first rendering, grows larger in the second, and nearly totally obscures his head in the third. Gerald Gooch took his own photos for reference when creating his hyper-realistic works.

An abstract landscape of Somes Bar, California, as seen from a bird's eye view, done in mezzotint by American artist Byron McClintock. The composition is divided in two halves on the paper, with one side in dark orange and and the other in mauve, an uninked dividing line between them similar to a river. McClintock has added a smattering of black lines and shapes in various thicknesses in the upper right, merging toward the middle, providing tension to the work.

A wooden sculpture by artist Pamela Boden. A biomorphic structure resembling a tall animal stands on five "legs" and is constructed of hollowed rectangular boxes and triangular points, appearing to be on the edge of movement. The effect is delicate and alien.

Pamela Boden pioneered non-objective sculpture at a time when women were often ignored by the art world. Her extraordinary work from the 40s and 50s stands the test of time. See "Bead Game" from all angles on our website:

Gustave Baumann uses browns, yellows, and reds for the tree's massive limbs, and gray-green and yellow-green for the leaves and moss that decorate the tree's crown. In the background is a bright blue sky, and between the branches and walkway can be seen glimpses of the Comal River. The pathway continues on beyond the tree, going over a low green hill.

The image features the heads of current global overseers of destruction and suffering, including politicians, media mouthpieces, and corporate leaders. Two groups of nude women are divided by a masked gunman in this untitled composition by Mexican-American artist Maria de los Angeles. The group on the left consists of kneeling women surrounding another with a paper bag over her head. The masked gunman stands with a pistol pointed at the bag; in the far left, cloaked Death looks on. To the right is a group of figures in a cage of sorts, unable to help, embracing each other out of fear or grief. Some appear to lack their full limbs; some have no heads. The work is done in black, charcoal gray, white, and rust orange. Her work frequently addresses themes of belonging, identity, and migration; this work also encompasses a theme of imprisonment and isolation, made all the more powerful by the vulnerability of the nude and limbless figures. De los Angeles is a Critic and Assistant Director of Graduate Studies for the Painting and Printmaking at the Yale School of Art, a former DACA recipient, and a bicoastal painter, printmaker, muralist, and assemblage artist.

Two images show the front and back of an intaglio print by the artist Claire Falkenstein. On the left is an image of two overlapping rings with an overlay pattern of randomized black marks, the background a textured sheet of dark gray lithographed onto the paper. The rings and marks are underscored by a gold line. The image on the rights shows the back of the print where Falkenstein used metal wire to deeply emboss the shapes into the paper, creating a three dimensionality to the work.
