I booked a psych visit tonight (online) to beg for a few days of sick leave so I can rest a bit.
Instead she said it's burnout and gave me 3.5 weeks of leave.
I am somehow shocked and unsurprised at the same time.

Today marks two years since my Dad passed. He was a complicated man, but he taught me to think deeply, question everything, and enjoy a bit of sarcasm in life. His reading taste influenced mine: my love of political intrigue, spy thrillers, and sci-fi and fantasy comes from him.
I miss you, Daddy.
The only use of the word (ish) in the entire novel.

Languages are fascinating π
To make it more complicated, we also have the word "charakter", but it means "personality" π
There is a synonym for "bohater" that means only "character" ("postaΔ"), but you can use them completely interchangeably. We do have the word "heros" (it's singular, from Greek) which is close to the English meaning, but it's a rather rare word, if not a bit archaic. Still, I suppose it fits best.
I can never answer these questions. Just one? How am I supposed to pick?
Vimes. Geralt (the book one). Aragorn. Jack O'Neill. The Doctor (Tenth and Eleventh are my faves). Captain Laurence (from Temeraire series). Katniss. And so much more... π
In my native language "hero" and "character" are the same word. ("Bohater", if you're curious.) Consequently, I've never really thought about the distinction before. I'm curious to see everybody's definitions.
#SFFChat Q2
I think "hero" is an in-world category. A protagonist or main character is the perspective of the reader. A hero is the perspective of the character. In Hunger Games, the rebels think Katniss is a hero. But Katniss herself doesn't really believe that. And Snow definitely doesn't.
Yeah, you know that saying - never meet your heroes? Not that I met her but it's the same sentiment.
There are no heroes in #UnderThePurpleSky. But they're all heroic in some ways - saving each other both in the physical sense as well as metaphorically.
And one of them becomes a myth to the others, in a way - spurring them into action.
Hiya! I'm Amy and the writer who inspired me to write the most was the British lady whom I don't want to mention due to her awful views on trans people. Her books led me to writing fanfiction, and although that wasn't my first story, it was the most impactful on my life overall.

I've done something really bad to my knee. Can hardly walk up and down the stairs. It's a lovely addition to my collection of health issues, and my increasing work burnout. Needless to say, I'm procrastinating on the editing of #UnderThePurpleSky due to general life overwhelm.

I'll figure something out eventually π
Crow's loyalty to the Emperor can never be questioned. Whether that loyalty is healthy (or, really, sane) is an entirely different thing.

Yes, but Rita wouldn't realise it's moisture, and it's her POV π
Absolutely! And then some people have completely different interpretations even when they do get the intention π€ it does help to have multiple voices, but in the end you gotta decide on one way π€£
Yeah, it is a balance. But I guess it's also about what kind of clarity it is. I don't want to say "his eyes are shining from unshed tears" because that possibility would never cross Rita's mind - the Emperor, close to tears! Impossible. But at the same time, the reader *should* realize what it is.
Thank you! It's pretty early in the book π
Oh, I'm glad that came through a little! I'll think about making it a little more obvious on the line edit, but it's good to know anyway, thank you β€οΈ
A little glimpse at how language can be a reflection of a culture - and something that shapes that culture at the same time.
(I have a degree in Philology, linguistics is fascinating to me.)

I don't have a sweetheart, but Leanne, Lia's mother, calls Lia "birdie" as an affectionate nickname. It shall do.

Yeah. I haven't started the line edit on this yet so I'm sure there's plenty of such surprises π€£ thanks for the suggestions π yeah, the arc between them is one of the most important part of the story.
Yeah I might have to rephrase that one π€£ Rita wouldn't understand that his eyes are glassy from unshed tears, she just registers something is different/wrong.
Rita is not good with words.

Lia is injured and that gives Malachi a new perspective.

Vimes and Lady Sybil are forever one of my favourite fictional couples ever.
Rita admires Malachi, it's a bit toxic (though platonic).
Lia loved her mom, but when she meets her again, it's quite a shock... And she loves her friend/roommate Tanny.
Malachi loved his mother but lost her at an early age and hasn't loved anyone since... Until he met Lia.
