Really excited to read this deep dive, as a (very) long time Dougal Dixon fan.
My long review of the 2025 edition of Dougal Dixon's The New Dinosaurs has just been published in Historical Biology. What is the 'use' of Speculative Zoology and how does this book connect to the history of dinosaur research? www.tandfonline.com/eprint/YTPSK... #SpecZoo #SpecBio
🌿 Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!
My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.
We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

Pls RT!
Photo of a seedling emerging among the leaflitter. The two opposite cotyledons are green, leafy and linear in shape. Two adult leaves (and one just emerging) show that the adult leaf morphology is pinnately compound.
As all gardeners know, cotyledons (the pair of seed "leaves") can look very different from the true, adult leaves of a plant. The cotyledons of this Operculicarya decaryi seedling are simple & linear, but the true leaves are pinnately compound. #seed #cotyledon #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
The car's in dock so I've got to go by bus.
Hey fellow scientists, I'm just letting you know that if you're promoting something with some junky AI image, I'm not gonna click. You've got a workshop, a conference, a new paper?
Just not gonna bother. You want a bespoke image? Hire an illustrator.
star trek themed doctors office that looks very like much the TNG/VOY era consoles. there is also a cardboard cutout of seven of nine!
one of the waiting chairs that looks like the bridge of the enterprise-D’s navigation console except that the chair is black.
im at the eye doctors. there is a doctor here who has a whole ass star trek themed setup
🚨 PhD Position in Plant Molecular Biology 🌱
We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join our team to study root protective barriers. If you are interested in confocal microscopy, cell wall biology, and plant development, this project might be for you! Please share!

I feel like we don't really talk about the weird arc of Jean-Luc Picard from stoic philosopher diplomat in the early seasons to anxious comedy boss in the later seasons
Fluorescence microscopy image of a spherical cluster of chloroplasts, showing magenta-stained interiors surrounded by bright green outlines against a black background.
Moss (Physcomitrium patens) protoplasts (wallless cells) transformed with chloroplast envelope protein tagged with mGFP (green). The chlorophyll autofluorescence is in magenta.
The protrusions of the chloroplast envelope are called stromules.

Wyrdlings!
It’s Douglas Adams’ 74th birthday and we take you to all the nice ones, with:

The internet, on scientists: They're secretive gatekeepers, they hoard esoterica/the truth, they don't want anyone in their ivory tower little clubs
Actual scientists: LOOK, WE FOUND A 300 MILLION YEAR OLD FOSSILIZED CLOACCAL IMPRESSION AND THE VENT IS HORIZONTAL! PLZ READ MY 67-PAGE PAPER ABOUT IT

ICAL are on home ground today!
We’re at Manchester Museum taking part in their HUGE British Science Week science festival for local schools.
This year, thanks to our @thepalass.bsky.social grant, we’ve added new interactive phylogenetic activity and an “surviving disasters” game to our roster!

“HIELANMAN'S UMBRELLA” should be a new law of journalism, which states that if AI generated photos are used in a news article, all reporting from that publication should be instantly distrusted.
Please help if you can. I have no connection to this but it’s just so unfair.
🚨 In-person registration closes today!
Don't miss out! 👇
Another problem w/this stupid idea is that diversity in university classes is good for all students. Spending 3 years with a bunch of other 18-year-olds from similar socioeconomic backgrounds is not healthy - having working class and mature students in the same class broadens everyone’s experiences:
Probably time to boost this again. Closing date is the end of June, so you still have nearly four months.
