Last week I watched “man on the run” the McCartney / Wings film and it showed. Honourable mention for Hemi Hemingway - new discovery that I enjoyed

A drop of blood falling onto 2 distant figures in silhouette. “Pagans” in red text, “two cops, one killer, hundreds of gods”. Author James Alistair Henry
Good afternoon - been a bit slow, but changed last weeks pick to “Pagans” by James Alistair Henry - it had been on my TBR for a while and someone on here reminded me of it. Thanks for that …excellent read so far and enjoying very much

Vaguely pleased with the picture of the blue tit (no mention will be made of the blurry attempts consigned to the virtual bin)
Doesn’t look like it is out in the Uk so I’ll add an alert from Amazon for when it is
That does sound interesting…
Maybe I’ll change my choice for this week and start this at last
Enjoy - you can tell it was written for newspapers as every chapter something happens…if you haven’t already give the three musketeers a go - I haven’t seen an adaption yet that does it justice.
It has a great ending (and there are some good books in that universe that continue) - hope you enjoy
A silhouette figure walking under archways - Title in orange “spies & other gods” - author “James Wolff”
Female figure hanging or climbing a rope up a cliff edge with a bird at the summit. “The Impossible Thing” by Belinda Bauer additional text “she’ll risk it all to steal”
'A funny, moving and beautifully written tale Guardian A summer's evening in 1926, and six-year-old Celie Shepherd is hungry, desperate and dangling from a cliff, as she stretches out to steal something impossible. The bold theft will change Celie's life, and the lives of many others. One hundred years later, a remote home is ransacked by masked men. The only thing taken: a dusty box containing that same impossible thing. What could be so unique - and so valuable -that it is stolen again and again... and again?
Finished “spies & other gods” last night. Good but not great, the office politics of spying was fun. A book subscription choice next (my first from @bertsbooks.bsky.social) - “The impossible thing” by Belinda Bauer. I know no more, so blurb on the back for reference - but looks interesting

Two deeply stressful films tonight for different reasons. Tough to say I enjoyed, but both were all encompassing. Prison has come a long way since porridge…maybe a bit of Ronnie Barker will calm me down - that how I want to imagine prisons…
I’m going to give it a listen next…
A great read though for me…
It’s a beautiful cover…
You had me at “rather gruesome”…
Well you have done more research than me…enjoy the A1
I’m hoping someone takes the idea and does something similar for the A6, for a few years I always seemed to be coming across different bits of that as it seemed to go everywhere - although the demand for A-Road literature must be a pretty niche request
I really enjoyed this - as someone who has traipsed up and done the A1 it was full of nuggets and done from a personal perspective that I found relatable
Found this thoroughly engaging - hope you enjoy
Thanks - just pre-ordered this. Can’t remember what I have read by him before but seem to recall I enjoyed it
That sounds interesting, might pick it up
Still have this on my TBR pile after being enticed by the cover in a book shop. Must make time for it
I agree - it was from my book subscription and nothing about the blurb made me want to pick it up - I finally did because I thought I should give it a go, otherwise it would be given to the charity shop without me attempting a page (and they are pretty good at Mr B’s picking my books). Glad I did
It really was, and I have discovered one of the characters is in an earlier book “the house of vesper sands” which I’m tempted to put aside plans and read now - I’ll definitely read more by the author
Glad you are enjoying it - I liked some of the time periods more than others and it left me ok but not fully satisfied - sometimes it’s the mood you are in when you read I suppose
Portrait of a woman with the right eye & nose showing beneath a mural of a plant with a bird resting in the branches. “Naming of the birds” by Paraic O’Donnell on a red ribbon in gold type
A figure walking away in silhouette under a series of arches. “Spies in other gods” in orange text and “James Wolff” in off white
Thoroughly enjoyed “The Naming of the Birds” by Paraic O’Donnell. A high quality late 19th century crime novel with Moriarty levels of criminal genius against a good gang of 4, the ending was a real late night page turner. On to “spies & other gods” by James Wolff this week

I’m hoping that the 2nd book will have to do less heavy lifting in terms of character / setting (and I get it is cultural scene setting on top of character). It gets good reviews, I went in with too high expectations I guess
Kong Sorrow sounds like an entirely different kind of book…really enjoyed this - just a great story with characters having room to breathe and plenty to do
