We are thrilled that Montgomery Square is now open. This space is dedicated to the Montgomery decade that changed the world. From 1955 to 1965, Black people with extraordinary courage sparked a movement in Montgomery that transformed our country and world.
The migrant workers/slaves who built the city is geopolitics. The dirty money, the sanctions evasion, the uneasy relationships with neighbours, the war UAE funds in Sudan... Anyone living there is exposed to geopolitics. Just now they can't pretend otherwise.
"The trade was not that you were getting exposed to geopolitics when moving to Dubai."
Gorgeous!
Thank you for the link to the Shrinking stylist in particular!

In which people CHOOSE TO VOTE for a female plumber representing a party with broadly liberal values and an unelected life peer declares it to be the end of liberal democracy.
Labour's swing toward racism is perhaps the biggest unforced error in British political history; burnt their base to ashes and won them not a single vote on the right.
Finished my Christmas book haul and can recommend all of them! My favourites were probably Heartwood (beautiful and gripping) and The Benefactors (incredible multiplicity of voices).
How might the wrongs of slavery be properly acknowledged, and redressed in Britain? What could each of us do?
Catherine Hall considers both historical and contemporary questions of race and repair.
Why isn't everyone talking about how good The Lowdown is?? (Okay, maybe it's because I'm 6 months behind the rest of you...)

It never ceases to confound me just how many folks think the point of essays is to provide teachers with essays. That teachers just like, collect them, or need them for sustenance or something. Rather than the point of them being the *actual fucking act of learning how to think about shit*
what even is the fucking point
Rereading Nathan Connolly's Case for Repair and struck by his call to dismantle white popular sovereignty. The fed govt is even more in thrall to "an amorphous mass of white Americans" than it was when he wrote this over a decade ago, and perhaps as much as it has ever been.
Black women took on roles as organisers, speakers (interestingly, they often read out the Emancipation Proclamation), and as beauty queens. I'm sure there will be some wonderful images of Goddesses of Liberty in this beautiful book.
I did some research into Emancipation Celebrations (which made its way into this edited collection link.springer.com/content/pdf/...) I was particularly fascinated by the role of Black women in these important public events...
The cover of Black Freedom!
The back cover!
An image of an emancipation day celebration!
Flower covered wagons from Juneteenth celebrations!
Thrilled to have an advance copy of Black Freedom in my hands! It was a pleasure to tell the stories of emancipation. It will be out June 2nd but available for preorder now!Preorders remind publishers that our history matters, even in this age of repression! www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/blair...
What a beautiful and important book.
Anyone looking at ICE and thinking it should be replicated automatically loses any arguments that they are not just a racist party. Not to mention that ending ILR would be devastating, not only for migrants but also the whole country. 1/

Reform UK will pledge to restore Britain's Christian heritage by preventing churches being converted into mosques, enacting mass deportations of illegal migrants and persuading British expats to return to the country Zia Yusuf, the party's new home affairs spokesman, said renewing Britain's Christian faith was vital to tackle the "crisis of meaning culturally" among ,young people and men in particular. In an interview with The Times before his first speech on Monday setting out his plans to be home secretary, he said Christianity was "core to the history and the DNA of the country". However, he said Britain was losing its Christian values because of the "sheer quantities of people that came to the country in a short period of time"
Zia Yusuf is a practising Muslim. He's currently fasting because it's Ramadan.
And he tells The Times this.
Written English has barely changed in 300 years. If you can read Harry Potter, you can read Robinson Crusoe (1719).
My 13 year old in tears telling us about Punch π (even though she knows he's okay now)
