Lots of 80s grunge had a similar sound to early Soundgarden - I think they would have evolved regardless of the lineup. I do think Ben Shepherd influenced their direction somewhat though, Hiro's mid-90s albums with Truly remind me of early SG.

Badmotorfinger is incredible, was my fave for years.
