‘Very Republican, very patriotic’: right-leaning civic centers now offer courses at US public colleges
Republican lawmakers push for conservative professors to counter purported leftwing indoctrination in schools
Want to know more about the sweeping trend of state mandated taxpayer financed and hyper empowered civics centers, and the political project they embody, as in Ohio? See this excellent @theguardian.com article @osuaaup.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

The more ICE cracks down in L.A., the harder the resistance hits back—straight from L.A.’s underground punk and ska-punk scene, packed with Latino and Black skankers.

image of a report cover, with a US flag in the background, and the text "The Political Disconnect: Working-Class and Low-Income People on What Politics Means to Them and How They Might be Mobilized”
Today I'm releasing probably the most important scholarly thing I've ever worked on - a report based on talking with 144 people about why they don't vote or only vote regularly, and on what needs to be done to build a democracy that can include everyone.

Nonprofit Killer Provision Quietly Disappears From Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill”
The infamous “nonprofit killer” provision quietly disappeared from Donald Trump’s "Big, Beautiful Bill" as it winds its way through Congress.
Massively good news: The provision that would have let the trump administration strip the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit organization they wanted simply by declaring them to be a "terrorist supporting organization" has been removed from the budget bill. Pushing back against these people works.

American civil society is full of abject cowards, that is the issue. The government is a mafia state but it is winning because most American elite institutions are devoid of anything resembling integrity and are folding rather than stand on principles that were little more than marketing.

Two-panel graph analyzing U.S. House Elections from 2006-2024. Left panel shows Democratic vote share increases as turnout gap with Republicans narrows, with a positive trend line (46-56% on y-axis). Right panel shows Democratic vote share decreases as party positioning moves from liberal to conservative, with a negative trend line. Election years are plotted as dots, with blue dots (2006, 2008, 2018) indicating Democratic House majorities and red dots indicating Republican majorities. Both graphs demonstrate that Democrats perform better with higher turnout and more liberal positioning.
1/🧵 Following up on our study featured in NYT today, this figure provides a macro-level view:
Dem vote shares rise with turnout parity (left) but fall with party-level ideological moderation (right). This suggests mobilizing base voters > persuading swing voters by moving to the center.

New paper from the computational culture lab, forthcoming @amjsoc.bsky.social!
Building on (largely untested) sociological intuitions, we show how positions in the organizational network relate to identification with the organization, using a language model:
