Opinion: In the Iran war, good news is bad news for oil, Canada and our future
The longer the conflict continues, the more itβs looking like an act of economic self-harm by the U.S., and Canadians will be collateral damage
Important point in @theglobeandmail.com as some Canadians suggest that Iran war is an opportunity to increase our oil production: any econ gains will be offset by inflation, fueled by oil price instability, esp. in carbon intensive Canada.
This war is *not* a reason to double down on fossil fuels.

Closing the high seas to fishing: A club approach
The worldβs fisheries are governed by a vast, and largely ineffective, set of international and regional institutions. If we are to preserve and managβ¦
We offer a solution here for reducing overfishing, which in turn will reduce incentives for fradulent labelling. At the end of the day, we can't expect private actors to provide regulation as robust as gov't rules.

This looks great! Havenβt read yet, but if governors get credit, wouldnβt that be an incentive for state level lobbying for fed investments?

OUT NOW: LMSU is back for 2026, kicking off with Summer Book Club. What could be more summery, or summary, than arguing climate policy goes wrong by focusing on managing tonnes rather than transitioning assets?

This is probably 60% of the content on QAA pod from @annieknk.bsky.social @travisview.bsky.social @jakerockatansky.bsky.social. It is painful stuff, but very important to understanding the world today.

Greenland tensions harden Europeβs push for energy independence
Nine countries agree to build joint offshore wind projects and cables in the North Sea
Middle powers btw a rock & a hard place. Canada needs to find new mkts for fossil energy outside of the ahem, fickle, US. EU needs to develop green energy / energy independence.
Energy transition will continue to reorganize global alliances -- if middle powers are smart and forward-looking.

After Decades of Deflection, ExxonMobil Moves to Reshape Global Climate Accounting
For decades, ExxonMobil argued consumers, not oil giants, should take responsibility for fossil fuel pollution. Itβs now backing Carbon Measuresβ accounting scheme, which moves pollution βliabilitiesβ...
yet another example from @desmog.com of how fossil asset owners fixate on "managing tons" thru carbon accounting to distract from the REAL problem: burning fossil fuels.
I write about why managing tons is doomed to fail extensively in my new book Existential Politics (link in bio).

Opinion | The Hidden Risk to the Housing Market
US economy based on a climate vulnerable asset: housing. And insurance industry can't keep up.
But vulnerable asset owners are mostly unorganized & thus underrepresented in policy and politics.
If the US housing market tanks, so does the US economy. Existential Politics in a nutshell.
