The moth gods were on my side in VC20 last night with 99:13 (97:11 macro), a Feb record with Small Quaker coming out the winner followed by Common &Hebrew Character! Star was a Pine Beauty; a garden rarity & not recorded last year. Lead me a dance trying to photo it & not the best image! #teammoth

Iβm so touched to be recognised by the @bristoluni.bsky.social with their 2026 Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.
The picture of me as an undergraduate in the early 1980s presents a vivid reminder of just how long Iβve been involved with this work!

A moth with a light greyish body and a black tail with three white spots down the side is hovering in front of some clusters of small yellow, bell-shaped flowers. Its wings are a brown blur with bright red-orange patches on the bottom edge. It is a hummingbird hawkmoth and it seems very early in the year for it to be flying.
Somewhat surprised to see this on Sandringham Road, #Norwich today⦠#moths #teammoth #insects
Today, the Trump administration repealed the endangerment finding: the ruling that served as the basis for limits on tailpipe emissions and power plant rules. Without it, weβll be less safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate changeβall so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money.
There are so many fucked up things with the current administration that it's hard to focus on one but this recent move is basically a death sentence for the planet. I've been involved with more boots on the ground actions over the years than I can count and this really bums me out.

Ridiculously steep slopes for our Work Party today to clear scrub from one of the last Duke of Burgundy sites left in Dorset. But the steepness is what saved it from fertilizing and allowed wildflowers to survive. It does mean it needs constant attention though @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Itβs time to stand up for our Protected Landscapes.
The Fingleton Review of nuclear regulation calls for weakening the protections that currently require councils to support and defend National Parks and National Landscapes.

A few photos from yesterdays work party to save one of the last sites for the Duke of Burgundy in Dorset. We were blessed with good weather but my goodness, the stopes are steep. Probably one of the reasons the site has escaped fertilizing and ploughing. @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Spotting hedgehogs, birds or butterflies in the city is a cause for celebration. But wildflowers growing on city streets are often seen as a problem. Trevor Dines book and video show people how to fall in love with their pavement weeds @bc-hertsmiddx.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Rare butterflies bounce back after landowners in Wales cut back on flailing hedges. Great news for Brown Hairstreak in Wales, mirroring our experience in London and Hertfordshire @savebutterflies.bsky.social @bc-hertsmiddx.bsky.social @hertswildlifetrust.bsky.social
The UK government didnβt want you to see this report on ecosystem collapse. Good to see itβs now getting some publicity. Please write to your MP to say itβs been noticed and ask that they press government to take it seriously @savebutterflies.bsky.social @bc-hertsmiddx.bsky.social
Great to see new hedges being planted, and with a really good mix of food plant species.
