Disability studies is very much a Western discipline, and while it can't represent everyone or even describe who is disabled (still, no, we are not all slightly disabled), it should strive to represent the global South too, to actualize the needs and wants of disabled people.
Also NGOs mostly fund causes according to their Western ideals rather than the actual needs of the local disabled people, preventing the sustainable change. While the decolonisation has happened politically, it has not economically, hurting locals and limiting possible employment of disabled too.
Just had a reality check during disability studies lecture. We talked about terminology in the class, then confronted with the fact that one of the main issues is extreme poverty of disabled people in Global South, and how declarations of rights of people with disability does nothing by itself.
In the mean time in Gaza, the genocide continues.
