So. I wonder how White House and Pentagon staffers did on the predictions markets yesterday.

I just happened to be listening to this when I saw this skeet…
Here’s how the next administration should designate and repurpose the new ballroom. “The Michelle Obama Capital District Shelter For The Unhoused.”

Thank you for the Research Materials. As a Scientist (not really), I find this messy bricolage of effects and behaviours to be unfalsifiable and irreplicable. Curious what might be an example of a refusal to accept an argument which didn’t count as Backfire Effect. But not very.
Would any of these tactics turn you into a Trump supporter?
I don’t disagree they need to be given a reason to care. I just don’t think the disapprobation of people they’ve been manoeuvred into an incoherent antagonism with is much of a stick.
… is that it presents most strongly in response to a challenge to the person themself, as opposed to a challenge the person’s beliefs or acts.
I thank you for telling me about the Backfire Effect, but I’ve actually heard about it before, and even seen it at work IRL once or twice, and my conception of this informally identified bias preservation behaviour…
Probably not instantaneously in front of the camera, no, like they were having a spell cast on them or something, but when somebody calls them a name or laughs and points at them, do they then instantaneously go, “whoa! Maybe I’m all turned around on this! Sorry guys!”
So any failure to be utterly swayed by the suggestion of an opposing viewpoint is the Backfire Effect in action? That’s some Effect!
Seems to me the way this Backfire Effect works is that if someone’s told there’s something innately wrong with them, it’s an attack on their Self and they’ll bridle. If they’re made to see they’ve merely *done* something wrong, then to correct for it is an affirmation of their Self.
I looked it up. TLDR. There was all this stuff about why do people root for losing teams or why do people dress outlandishly or why do people listen to unpopular music or go on LARPing picnics or do anything which invites ridicule or derision they’re equipped to shrug off.
I don’t think so. I think that to call someone an idiot is to tar them with a constitutional limitation which by definition they’re powerless to overcome, and to make them feel shame for that is cruel. However, you can show someone they’ve made a mistake. Then they’re not bad, they’re just wrong.
Persuasion doesn’t work by making people feel dumb, persuasion works by showing people they’re in error.
Has anyone but a religious casualty or a pervert ever been shamed into believing something?
Or… “you’re calling me dumb? I’m not dumb, YOU’RE dumb!”
Person who believes X goes all in with other persons who believe X, where they feel accepted and smart, and never again take seriously any challenge to their belief in X.
Wouldn’t the “deportation” of a citizen, born or naturalized, be more properly referred to as “banishment?”
“The New York Times collaborated with a white nationalist eugenicist hacker and agreed to keep his identity a secret to publish a Zohran Mamdani hit piece” is a way bigger story than “18 year old Zohran Mamdani ticked ‘African American’ on his Columbia application because he was a citizen of Uganda”
I’m pretty sure Aslan with the mice at the Stone Table is TLTWATW, not TMN?
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Can I be not the “why ‘He’?” person but still be the “why some punctuation and case distinction but not all punctuation and case distinction?” person?
“Views divergent from my own are something I should never resent, as little as I resent one’s having any other disability, one short leg, a clumsy hand, etc. I could only feel sorry for such a person, not angry.”

I had a joke about Epimetheus, but thinking about it now, it wasn’t very good.
I’m sore because I actually used to employ the word “unhinged” pretty often.
The bewailing of opera’s irreparable corruption has been one of that world’s most tedious pastimes roughly since Monteverdi moved to Venice. Was this one of Rudolf Bing’s books?
