His photographs are very evocative of the north-west. My paternal grandmother was brought up not far away. Egerton Buildings, now Egerton Court. Both my paternal grandparents/great grandparents were all around the same area and the men were Vickers dock workers

β€œ#York, The Castle 1851” is an OS rarity, & from our sample you can see why.
Some early OS maps were so detailed that floorplans of prominent buildings were included. It was soon noted that it wasn't a good idea to have the plans of jails etc publicly available!
