Horses at Ka Lae (South Point). There used to be a row of abandoned wind turbines here, rusting away and creaking in the breeze. They've since been replaced by the shiny new ones in the background.

NΔnΔ are closely related to Canada Geese, which if not obvious from their appearance, is at least apparent in some of their behaviors. At Hakalau Forest NWR. πͺΆ
Κ»IΚ»iwi at Hakalau Forest NWR. This one was dancing around in some koa and generally staying out of sight, but I managed to squeeze off a quick burst as it fluttered between branches.

A lone male Κ»AkiapΕlΔΚ»au extracts its prey from a decaying koa branch. At Hakalau Forest NWR, which I was really fortunate to explore while visiting my hometown earlier this week. A good demonstration of the uses of both sides of its unique bill.

European Starlings cross flight paths with a Great Blue Heron. GBHs are over represented in my library of bird-in-flight photos, owing to their ubiquity, size, and slow predictable flight. But I like that this one has a mix of species in frame.

Spotted this Greater Yellowlegs (I think, judging by the slighly upturned beak) skimming over the water. At Tualatin River NWR.

For your consideration on #InternationalOwlAwarenessDay - a Eurasian Eagle-Owl (photographed here at a falconry show). Delightfully, its binomial name is Bubo bubo.
A juvenile Common Yellowthroat prancing around on the edge of a wetland. I often find myself stymied by the elusive adults, who seem to appear for but a brief second before darting into the undergrowth. But these young ones seemed unbothered by my presence.

Two more photos from my long weekend in LA, this time of a Great Blue Heron with a fresh catch. It's impressive how well camouflaged the GBH becomes against a backdrop of rocky beach. πͺΆ
A pair of California Towhee juveniles perched in the brush. Their calls are less grating than their Spotted cousins (who I'm more accustomed to seeing in the PNW).

Oops, it's a 4000, not a 3000.
For my birthday this year, Jo got me a biplane ride over the Columbia River Gorge. The views were incredible, but also, just look at this beaut - a Travel Air 3000 circa the late 20's.
