Without addressing the social aspects behind retaliatory killing, legal protections alone won't be enough to ensure conservation of large carnivores.
To promote coexistence, we recommend community outreach focused on female and younger population, rapid-response teams in high-conflict areas, providing alternative livelihoods, and more emphasis on preventive methods.
Despite generally positive attitudes, support for killing bears increased with the intensity of bear encounters. Younger, less educated, and female respondents were more likely to accept lethal control, while those with alternative income sources were less supportive.
We surveyed 390 people living across 26 villages in northern Iran, where conflicts with brown bears (Ursus arctos) are common.

Importantly, attitudes toward KITNOC were most influenced by beliefs about culpability and the importance of using less harmful alternatives. Our findings highlight the need for value-based dialogue in conservation policy.
While opposition to KITNOC was common, we found notable nuances shaped by gender, educational background, and underlying values.
We surveyed 398 university students across four disciplines in Iran, examining their attitudes on controversial conservation practices from trophy hunting of lions to killing of free-ranging dogs and invasive pythons.
I am happy to share our new article, published in Biological Conservation, in collaboration with a fantastic team including Danial Nayeri, Alireza Mohammadi, Mohammad Farhadinia, Jeremy Bruskotter, and John A. Vucetich, exploring attitudes toward killing in the name of conservation (KITNOC).
It was once said that a squirrel could travel through longleaf pine canopies from Virginia to Texas without touching the ground. But today, these majestic trees have declined by 90% from their original range and are now considered an endangered and vulnerable ecosystem.
