True reproductive justice means acknowledging what happened to Carrie Buck as well as so many other women. It means acknowledging that Buck v. Bell was never overturned and that forced sterilizations do still happen, especially to the most vulnerable women such as those in ICE detention.

While forced sterilizations happen less these days than they did last century, they do still happen. Recently, we've heard about them happening to women in ICE detention.

Two decades after Carrie Buck's death, the Virginia governor issued an "apology" for the state's role in eugenics and a historical marker was erected in her honor.

Buck v. Bell legalized eugenic sterilizations. 60% of forced sterilizations between 1927 and 1957 in America happened to women. Women of color, disabled women, and poor women were particularly likely to be sterilized. Buck v. Bell was never overturned.

Today I'm thinking about Carrie Buck. Carrie, after being sexually assaulted as a teenager, was forcibly sterilized following the Buck v. Bell ruling. Buck v. Bell legalized eugenic sterilizations.

International Women's Day means celebrating women but also acknowledging painful histories and ongoing oppression.

This day feels hollow coming so shortly after over 150 girls from Minab were killed in the bombing of their school, and when so many women are locked up in ICE detention.

We can't celebrate International Women's Day without talking about the women of Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, and other places who have been killed by US and Israeli bombs, or the ones who are currently experiencing the oppression that genocide, apartheid, and US imperialism inevitably bring.
