How Hitler found his blueprint for a German empire by looking to the American West On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Americans must recognize the ugly history of how the Nazis were inspired by the long and brutal U.S. campaign against Native Americans.

Diving more into the history, I was struck by this quote:

β€œOur Mississippi must be the Volga.”

Said by Hitler in the context of the conquest of the Soviet Union, drawing a parallel to the ethnic cleansing of the American continent.

Thanks to a local book club, I plowed through Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. A hopeless tale of bloodbath between Americans, Native Indians, and Mexicans during 1850s that renders the reader desensitised to the horrific violence.

The Fortune Teller, 1630s. So much deception! And not for nothing do some refer to Georges de la Tour as Master of the Side-Eye. He was born on this day in 1593.

The Egyptian goose is an invasive species in the EU since 2017 due to its aggression toward native birds. It cannot be imported, bred, transported, sold, used, exchanged, or released. Member states must work to eradicate it.

An adjacent tree monument commemorates Walraven van Hall, a Dutch banker who successfully robbed the then Nazi leaders of a Dutch bank and spent the money on the resistance's needs.

In 1864 Prince Hendrik opened the Paleis voor Volksvlijt (Palace of Industry) on the square, commissioned by the Jewish doctor and philanthropist Samuel Sarphati.

It was destroyed by fire in 1929 and the headquarters of the Dutch bank was later built here.

Memorial to Alexei Navalny on Fredericksplein, maintained by local residents.

The square is named after Prince Frederick, a militarist who sent Dutch troops to suppress the Belgian uprising in 1830 that resulted in Belgium's independence.

Maybe it is time to rename the square?

I didn't expect to stumble upon an MS-DOS manual and a bunch of other retro computer stuff in the window today.

When I write my journal entries in Obsidian, I'm often conflicted about linking. I want clean uninterrupted text, but at the same time being able to view all entries related to a person, place, or mood seems useful. I wonder if any auto-linking solutions exist.

Delighted by the forsaken fantasy world of Flow. Reminds me of Tamriel from Morrowind.
