In 1864 Prince Hendrik opened the Paleis voor Volksvlijt (Palace of Industry) on the square, commissioned by the Jewish doctor and philanthropist Samuel Sarphati.
It was destroyed by fire in 1929 and the headquarters of the Dutch bank was later built here.
