Review text: I'm a mark for Absolute Batman. Even at this book's most indulgent and meta-referential, it operates at an emotional tenor that just works for me. That is to say, this book is vibes-first, and the vibe this time is a Florence and the Machine fantasy. Eric Canete joins the creative team to lend a harsh and heavily-inked tactility to both Gotham and Poison Ivy's overgrown wonderland. He handles scale excellently, making Bruce and pre-transformation Ivy feel tiny and vulnerable against the mazes of skyscrapers. Snyder for his part, pulls on Ivy's crunchy return-to-nature themes, portraying her as a woman finding ecstatic release from her ego by becoming one with every part of the natural world, all at once. Every time Nick Dragotta isn't on this book, I worry a little, but evidently I should stop. Scott Snyder has locked into the heightened register of this series and its breakneck pace, well enough to keep the energy up even when paired with more traditional-looking pages and shorter arcs.
