Everything the US moves around needs diesel fuel to power the trucks, trains, & boats: food, goods, crops, commodities, everything. Oil products powers ~90% of US transport. It's why we should electrify transport as a national security imperative: to reduce the risk of price shocks to the economy.

๐ŸŒฟ Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!

My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.

We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

The problem of militarization of counter-narcotics ops is it assumes the state is distinct from cartels.

However, ike insurgencies everywhere else pace Paul Staniland, the state can co-exist, support, and fight insurgent groups.

So, militaries can be corrupted, lose cohesion, and enter politics.

Urine tests reveal "substantial" consumption of ethanol by wild chimpanzees.๐Ÿงช
Previously, researchers assessed ethanol levels in ripe fruits & how much of these fruits the chimps typically ate to estimate that they consumed ~1.5 drinks a day. BUT directly demonstrating alc consumption was trickier.

Why Donโ€™t Humans Have A Mating Season? An Evolutionary Biologist Explains Humans donโ€™t have a defined mating season like deer or wolves. Hereโ€™s how evolution blended biology, culture and social life into year-round intimacy.

A recent article in @forbes.com (www.forbes.com/sites/scottt...) mentions the article by F. H. Bronson titled Seasonal Variation in Human Reproduction that appeared in the June 1995 issue of the QRB (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...).

The cuts to existing programs and graduate research fellowships have a pattern: the Trump Administration is dismantling our ability to study ecology, biodiversity science, and climate research:

Theyโ€™re putting Silicon Valley billionaires above studying Earthโ€™s life support system.

โ„๏ธ Common shrews shrink their brains in winter.

๐Ÿง  The process is reversible and occurs because brain cells shrink, rather than die off. As a result, neuronal numbers stay constant and preserve brain function.

I can defo relate to seasonal brain shrinkage.

How seabird poop helped fuel ancient civilizations in Peru The Chincha Islands off the coast of Peru are home to many seabird species that cover their island homes with thick layers of poop, or guano. New research now suggests that ancient Peruvians in theโ€ฆ

Ancient Peruvians in the Chincha Valley used seabird guano from the Chincha Islands to fertilize maize, helping pre-Inca societies expand.

Nitrogen in 2,200-year-old maize matches local seabirds โ€” evidence of an early, tightly managed fertilizer system later controlled by the Inca.

The Amazonโ€™s most valuable export isnโ€™t timber โ€” itโ€™s rain Rainfall is often treated as a gift of geography โ€” a function of latitude, oceans, and atmospheric circulation. A growing body of research suggests that in the tropics, it is also a product ofโ€ฆ

Tropical forests generate vast rainfall through โ€œflying rivers,โ€ meaning farms & cities may depend on ecosystems far away.

Even small-scale clearing can reduce precipitation, threatening agriculture, river flows & hydropower. In the Amazon, this rainmaking service is worth tens of billions yearly.

In 1998, only 0.6% of trips in Bogotรก were taken by bike. Then, the city built 180 miles of protected bike lanes in just three years. By 2019, the network had been expanded to more than 330 miles, and 9% of trips were made by bike.

Bogotรก now has 900,000 daily bike trips.
