Cooperβs hawk
I was wondering where all the birds were this morning. We had several hundred yesterday - many species with the highest counts for the yard in years. Cooperβs Hawkβs sitting outside my kitchen window guarding the feeders. #birds #Coopershawk #birdsofprey

Andβ¦barely a boardwalk in Baxter State Park, ME. The boards crossed a stream, then led through an exquisite spruce forest.

My best girl Boo on the Saltmarsh Trail at Bombay Hook, DE. Hard to believe she passed away at 16.5 from congestive heart failure a few weeks after this pic was taken. She had a heart murmur for several years but she still had lots of spunk for an old gal. Sweetest girl π

Merry Christmas from this young Cooperβs Hawk that showed up this morning. Zoomed and shot through my kitchen window.
Right about now is usually when activity picks up.
I hear this year is supposed to be an off year. An ornithologist I met last year said that was the biggest irruption year in 20 years. When we went in 2024, we only saw 1 great gray, but last season sure made up for that!
That is the Admiral Road feeding station.
3 times, most recently last year when we made an impulse trip (only an 18-20 hour drive). Major owl irruption. It was incredible- great grays were literally everywhere, even outside the bog, plus a few boreal owls.

You can kill it if it has internal or neurological injury. Any Rehabber will direct you not to feed any injured animal. We often think we are helping, but can actually cause more harm - good intentions can go wrong and kill an injured animal. Iβve volunteered for wild bird rescue for many years.

That should say under the snow - autocorrect, sorry. Do not attempt to feed it, and please get to rehab asap. Thank you for caring.
Please reach out to a wildlife Rehabber. It should go to a rehab so they can evaluate it. Itβs a house finch. They are cold hardy, so there could be an underlying reason why it ended up u see the snow. It needs to be kept in a warm, dark place - a small box with air holes lined with paper towels.

Sunrise over the marsh
American bittern
I stood quiet and still atop the observation tower at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR as the sun rose over the marsh. I was rewarded with thousands of tree swallows beginning a new day. An American bittern flew in, allowing me a single digiscoped shot before disappearing in the vegetation. #sunrise #birding

American goldfinches love to peck away at the leaves. We grow it in our garden and could not figure out why the leaves had small tears in them - they werenβt typical insect damage. Then we observed the goldfinches land on the leaf and nibble! We donβt mind sharing.
