Short fun interview with McNultyLab member, and @bellmuseum.bsky.social Fellowship recipient, Risa Lama-Luther!

Very excited to share this OA paper that introduces nonlinear Bayesian models for calculating individual growth trajectories and provides a web-based tool for clinicians to apply it in real time! Honored and humbled to work with this amazing team.

Congratulations to the incomparable @mitopr.bsky.social on her award of a McKnight Foundation Fellowship.
Custom-made display tables finally arrived at the Rusinga Island Presitory museum!
This even popped up in my mainstream news feed! Great paper.
First home game for @mnufc.com and just before the game this arose from the stands!
Also, to the grant reviewer who didn't believe I could build a small museum for the amount listed in the budget: STAY IN YOUR LANE.
I deeply appreciate the work and wisdom of reviewers, but unless you've built the amount of community infrastructure on Rusinga that I have, stick to what you know.
We hired a local artist to paint a mural of what the Early Miocene on Rusinga Island may have looked like. Here he is at work! This will be just inside of the entrance at the Rusinga Island Prehistory Organization's Interpretive Centre!
Having a "mango meeting" with some of my favorite people, including @leakeyfoundation.org grantees John Kingston, Laura MacLatchy, @susycote.bsky.social('s hand), and Fredrick Manthi, plus SMU researcher Alisa Winkler. Fun to catch up with everyone and strategize about Kenyan student training.
Driving on all fours: when the engine will cut out if you dont keep your foot on the accelerator, but traffic has jammed, so you have to depress the clutch with your other foot and use the hand-brake to stop. Still have 1 limb left for the steering wheel!
Is rage-sobbing a thing? Is there a better word for it?
To all you nice people: when someone recalls a gesture, action, or words of yours that had a huge impact but you dont recall the moment: don't feel bad! It doesn't mean you're self absorbed. It means kindness and generosity are a habit not an exception. You make the world better just by being you!
My son observed today that radio interpretations of Christmas songs vary so much more than other songs [with most versions Big Yikes, in his opinion]. Also #paleoanthropology: so many researchers interpreting limited evidence pushes some to brilliance, others to the limits of palatability.
The best defense is a good offense!
Check out this new OA article on diet and molar root cervix morphology by my postdoc Dr. Zana Sims! "This region provides a more nuanced understanding of dental adaptation along the folivoreโfrugivore continuum." Congrats Zana!

My PhD student Jaime Zolik and I were interviewed on the @anthrobiology.bsky.social podcast about our aDNA ๐งฌ๐work with community partners in Peru. Have a listen to hear what Jaime & our lab have been up to! ๐ค Thx Gaby for inviting us on! @umnanth.bsky.social

So pleased to introduce the newly minted Dr. Abbey Hall! Abbey's research on Early Miocene mammal communities is a tremendous body of work that will be yielding insights far beyond her dissertation. Congratulations! ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐
For #fossilfriday I'm happy to announce this short OA piece about a small but fossil site formerly called "Meswa Bridge." This came about through collaboration with local officials and wonderful interactions with the Tonde community.

Had a great time working on nasal septum deviation with new collaborators from BU's Goldman School of Dental Medicine, @richsherw.bsky.social and others.

You: where did you develop such wonky taste in music?
Me: ๐คทโโ๏ธ no idea how that came about.
Also me: <sorting through cassette tapes to find...

I don't know who needs to hear this, but the point of placing an online coffee order is so that it will be ready at the scheduled pick up time, not so that I can place my order when I arrive. This very modest goal should be achievable, at least when establishments are not busy.
When your behavior is determined by others--directly or in response--you lose degrees of freedom, making it much harder for anything you do to be significant.
Are you a biological anthropologist who loves nerding out about human evolution, fossils and/or adaptation ? ๐๐ ๐ค Do you like doing research and teaching? Do you want to live in the Twin Cities? ๐ โ๏ธโ๏ธThen join us at the University of Minnesota! See ad here:๐

How do you design exhibits on local African paleontology? You start by talking to the people who live where the fossils are from. Now we only have bare walls, but we got enough ideas to fill the space...and then some! #rusingaisland
