A 2500 années-lumière de nous, des étoiles naissent, formant la nébuleuse du sapin de Noël, longue de 30 années-lumière !
National meeting HALO to coordinate the contribution of the French community to two space based observatories that will search for extraterrestrial life in the mid 40s. Such ambitious goals and requirements of very diverse expertises.
Excellent visit last week to IPAG, Grenoble, talking all things exoplanets+direct imaging; even got a sneak peak in the clean room at new VIPA spectrograph! Big thanks @mickaelbonnefoy.bsky.social & @lucieleboulleux.bsky.social for hosting me, IPAG wins prize for most impressive seminar room door!
These are the planets to scale not only in size, but also in their tilt and rotation speed. Pluto and Ceres (a couple of dwarf planets) are included whether you like them or not 🫣
Hubble image of 30 Doradus. Pale pink and blue nebula clouds surrounding a central cavity dominate the image. Intermixed are dark, dusty cloud-like structures. In the center is a bright cluster of pink, white, and orange stars which are partially obscured by the surrounding nebula. There is a bright orange star, with Hubble's characteristic 4-pointed star shape, in the central cavity at the same location as the bright star seen in the JWST image, but it is not nearly as bright or prominent.
JWST image of 30 Doradus. Tan-colored nebula clouds with rust-colored highlights surround a black central area containing a bright cluster of sparkling pale blue stars that scatter outward from a densely packed center. The shape is roughly the same as the Hubble image, but the central star cluster is less obscured. One bright yellow star stands out in the central open area, with eight long thin points.
The star-forming region 30 Doradus, also known as the Tarantula Nebula, seen in visible and near-infrared light with Hubble and near-infrared light with JWST.🔭🧪

STScI received 2,377 proposals for #JWST Cycle 4 – breaking its own record from Cycle 3 – requesting about 78,000 hours of observing time. Get more proposal submission statistics: bit.ly/3NLxuka
Deux jours de meeting pour le projet
@ugrenoblealpes.bsky.social Origin of Life. Quels marqueurs de vie sur les exoplanètes ? Des questions fascinantes auxquelles nous devons répondre avec chimistes et biologistes pour designer la génération d'instruments sur l'ELT à l'horizon 2035-2040.
