And that’s to say nothing about the fact Ctrl-F is useless when you’re reading a physical book.

Beyond that, indexes show you the structure of a text and use cross-references to help you find more information (things you didn’t know to look for).

Ctrl-F can fail you on a few fronts. 1. Way too many results to be useful, with no subcategorizing. 2. False positives. 3. Missing results because of different phrasing or oblique references. 4. You don’t come up with the term the author used. (Cont.)

And for non-fic that your index will be done by a real human being.

Nope! There are whole societies of indexing professionals out there where you can find indexers who specialize in your genre/field, such as indexers.ca.

I may be a CMOS-for-life person, but I get no end of enjoyment from my fellow nerds who wrote all the citation examples for the MLA Handbook, 9th ed. I see you, Buffy lovers, Trekkies, and D&D gamers, to name a few. So many lovely gems in here.

Lots of people have already mentioned microfilm and microfiche, so I’ll go with a skill I’m confident I’ll never employ again (because microf— can be great!):

Operating a mimeograph machine. Also, making transparencies for lectures.

Thank you! That was one of the first things that jumped out at me. I hate to write off a ST series without giving it a try, but my inner Trekkie is noping out like Picard around Lwaxana.

Would willingness to write essays (not outsource to AI) be improved if rhetoric had remained a mainstay of the curriculum? (These are the thoughts I think when indexing multi-volume texts on the history of rhetoric).

But then, I’ve read the letters medieval students wrote home.
