Using discourse analysis, I show how not all queer & male-identified individuals in Sinophone contexts navigate the same sets of ideological influences, nor in the same ways, despite the ostensible stability of associated cultural & sexual labels.
What's 'normal' anyway? Based on linguistic ethnography in the Chinese queer-identified male community, I pluralise 'normativity' & use discourse analysis to show how various forms of normative structural forces are negotiated through language & semiotics.

Do 'Chinese gays' come out? While paying due attention to the diversity of lived experience connoted by identity terms like 'Chinese' and 'gay', I use sociocultural discourse analysis to investigate the underlying interdependence of language, culture & ideology.
