Every year, as wildfires choke us with smoke and the warnings of drought get louder, our government sides with fossil fuel billionaires over people and the planet. It’s not just apathy that brought us here, it’s corruption. (1/3)

A group of BC mappers, data visualizers & activists working on BC enviro & economic issues, both in pictures & behind the scenes. The “commons” in our name suggests only the “tragedy of the commons" & always honours Indigenous sovereignty.

New from Reckoning 9, "Biologists say it will take at least a generation for the river to recover (Klamath River hymn)" by Leah Bobet, a beautiful piece of rhyming/rhythming/flowing verse about the anticipatory joy of resurgent life in a river recently unleashed reckoning.press/biologists-s...

Batteries not only power electric cars, but can supply energy to buildings and stabilize power grids, through bidirectional charging. 🔌💡#V2G

Important new study shows that the best way to power data centers is with solar microgrids!
Also, 1.5 million Germans have hung solar panels off their balconies this year, and now Spaniards are copying them!
Also, kids in Montana win huge climate fight!

Faced with constraints on how quickly they can connect to the grid, data centers are looking at direct gas deliveries and on-site generation to meet their power needs. Our inability to grow the grid and connect clean energy is having some pretty significant consequences: heated.world/p/ai-is-guzz...
A cloudless satellite image of the Earth, centred on the Pacific Ocean. Only ocean is visible over the entire disk except for a glimpse of Australia bottom left and a hint of North America top right with the Arctic ice cap visible at the top.
We call it Earth only because we're land dwellers. This image shows how massive the Pacific Ocean is, covering 1/3 of the Earth's surface.
This cloudless image of the Earth centered on the Pacific was produced by NOAA satellites, which took photos over eleven ten-day periods and merged them.
There are still climate people who believe Musk is secretly whispering pro-climate messages into the ears of Republicans and changing them from the inside

hot take but all politicians who spend time punching down on trans kids are intentionally trying to distract us from actual problems they want to do nothing about, like manufactured poverty, the climate crisis, the power imbalance between workers and billionaires
That would be the fox guarding the fox!
In Canada, it turns out that all that "grassroots support" for oil and gas is simply the Conservative Party and the fossil fuel industry in a trenchcoat. @johnvaillant.bsky.social

BC Hydro’s plans to give the controversial dam and reservoir Indigenous language names are being called inappropriate by a First Nations chief whose traditional territory was flooded by the megaproject. @sarahkcox.bsky.social @thenarwhal.ca 👇🏼

We believe that climate & environmental issues can't be solved separately from socioeconomic ones like inequality. Everything must be tackled together on Spaceship Earth, since these issues are intimately interconnected. Billionaires with enough money to own gov'ts prevent effective climate action.
Because we want to stay nimble and able to turn on a dime on issues as they arise, we long ago decided not to have a society number, board or sluggish hierarchy. BC ENGOs often do great work but BC also needs groups not beholden to foundations, parties, & other NGO constraints. So that's us.
Hello!
We're a small BC group of mappers, environmentalists, designers and activists who work behind the scenes with other groups on issues and who sometimes visualize BC issues to make them more graspable.
We have a great mapping project coming up - stay tuned!
Nice to be here with you all.
