After a long (but fun!) postdoc journey, I am very excited to share that I will start my own lab in the Ubiquitin Signalling Division at WEHI. We will study how ubiquitin controls mitochondrial health and its role in neurodegenerative disease. Hiring soon!

A big year for the lab!
We hosted Australia’s first ubiquitin summit in Lorne,
Published the structure of PINK1 on a mitochondrial translocase array,
Reported a new PLpro inhibitor for long COVID,
Celebrated 3 PhD and 1 honours completions,
Went on a lab footy trip, 🏈
Won the Eureka prize!! πŸ†

‼️Towards the end of #AusUb25, we caught up with Jonathan Pruneda to discuss ubiquitin signalling and its relationship with host-pathogen interactions. It was an amazing conference and such a great chance to meet people from across the ubiquitin field 🀩

UBA6 specificity for ubiquitin E2 conjugating enzymes reveals a priority mechanism of BIRC6 Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Published online: 05 December 2025; doi:10.1038/s41594-025-01717-zRiechmann et al. uncover structural features governing ubiquitin transfer from ubiquitin-activating E1 enzymes UBA1 and UBA6 to specific E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes, revealing a hierarchy of E2 activity with cognate E1s.

It’s hard to believe that #AusUb2025 has already come to an end 😒. Don’t worry though - we’ll still be posting our speaker interviews in the next couple of days.

Here’s what Sonja Lorenz thought of the Australian Ubiquitin Summit. πŸ‘‡

What a fantastic few days at The *inaugural* Australian Ubiquitin Summit 🀩 #UbiquitinByTheBay

It was fun to contribute behind the scenes in the lead-up, help chair the opening session, host lightning talks, and dive into conversations during the poster session and EMCR panel discussions.
