I wrote a piece for @sciam.bsky.social about why White parents should be talking to their kids about race and racism. It was so great to work with @megha.bsky.social on this piece! Please share! www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

Gov. Murphy, could you please step in to provide the residents of Northern NJ information - any information at all - about the reasons dozens of military grade drones are flying over our neighborhoods each night? People are anxious and scared.
Thank you Linda! Iβve said it to you before, but could never say it enough: thank you for *everything*!
And congrats to Chris! Virtual high five!
I guess my point is this: I have been amazed this semester seeing my students react to these ideas. Things that make me -as a social psychologist-say βof courseβ are light bulbs in their heads.
After the tumult in our field, Iβm feeling a deep appreciation for the power of our fundamental ideas.
Ideas that we take for granted are either not obvious to people or are under-appreciated. Ideas like:
-people are innately driven to belong, and that shapes almost everything we do
-situations are immensely powerful
-we will do wildly irrational things in service of the above.

I think us social psychologists can sometimes see our fieldβs insights as a given / second-nature. Our way of seeing becomes 2nd nature for us. But for our students, social psych can provide powerful *new* frameworks for understanding humans.

Teaching a social psyc course for the 1st time in awhile. With all of the tumult in our field, I think itβs easy to lose track of this: social psyc offers an incredibly powerful lens to understand our world.

Itβs such an indictment of β¦ wellβ¦ everything right now.
I would have to think this through more, but βDonβt Look Upβ struck me as covering a lot of ground regarding ideology, and motivated reasoning, and group dynamics, and media, and populismβ¦
One part of academia that you rarely see discussed in these spaces is *advising*. Folks at Primarily Undergrad Institutions often have sizable advising loads. It is a *core* part of the work we do w/ students- academic strategizing, career planning, life coaching. A lot of work but super rewarding!
I have purposefully built flexibilities into my course that ALL students can use. Not a free for all, but rules about when and how to request extensions, etc. This cuts down on the need for some students to use specialized accommodations AND itβshelpful to other students.
But is strict = clear guidelines with flexibility, probably not so bad.

How strict are we talking? Utterly strict: yes. Dad of disabled kid here. She will never have perfect attendance and will likely always have things that pull her away from work at certain points.

A colleague (Patrick Dolan, not on BS) pointed me to this. OF COURSE someone had done the study. π

YES! I had been imaging some Cialdini-style tinkering with the wording of the message. But yours is so much more elegant! π
Left in front of the Psych Offices during campus-wide trick-or-treating. Definitely feels like weβre setting them up with some old school social psych manipulation. π
You got it. They know to direct donations accordingly.
Hi there- once you click the link in my original post, you should see these directions and a link to click to get started!
I appreciate my former students nominating me for this (they are the BEST), and it is an attempt to raise $$ for a good causeβ dissertation research grants for students. Please consider contributing if youβre able.
As a former student, I am so excited to honor and celebrate Linda in this way. She has made a profound difference in my life, and the lives of so many other psychologists.
And her body of work speaks to some of the most pressing issues in this socio-political moment.
And if you donate any amount, you will have the opportunity to post a tribute to Linda on her heritage wall!
Donations to the SPSP Heritage Initiative are used to support dissertation research grants,Β with a goal of $2500. We are inviting you to donate whatever you can in Lindaβs name to have her name and bio placed on the Heritage Wall!
Let's celebrate @lindaskitka.bsky.social!
