Imagine if anthropologists visited a remote village with no grocery store and one restaurant that only served hamburgers and then concluded based on their observations that the villagers prefer hamburgers. That's essentially the discourse surrounding Americans and their relationship to cars.

And worth noting also that there's a subset of Americans (namely folks with small kids and/or mobility issues) who end up really alienated by the glibness of bike/public transit folks, who might be more open to car alternatives if their needs were treated with more seriousness by those advocates.

There are a lot of anti-car culture folks who put the cart before the horse and make broad generalizations about how simple it is to live without a car and just bike everywhere and, no.

As more serious advocates tend to acknowledge.

We need safer streets and more accessible/safe/consistent transit first, that's what positions us to move away from car culture and make that shift actually appealing.
