Incidentally, I also think @soumitrashukla.bsky.social's idea has major implications for how we think about the political effects of job transitions in political economy. Cultural fit matters for which new jobs I am willing to transition to. Overlooking this can easily lead us to under-estimate the
This is one of the best papers that I've read this year! It demonstrates the power of bringing rigorous modern empirical methods to bear on the intuitions developed by previous generations of social scientists -- in this case Bourdieu. It also helps us soumitrashukla.github.io/making_the_e...

π€ As firms increasingly automate hiring, our study suggests that removing human interaction from candidate screening might hurt workers by robbing them of valuable information about prospective employers.

π€ As firms increasingly automate hiring, our study suggests that removing human interaction from candidate screening might hurt workers by robbing them of valuable information about prospective employers.
π Our evidence is consistent with workers learning about firms, with the "easy interview penalty" being larger in less well-reputed establishments.
π Key finding: Difficult interviews signal colleague ability whereas easy interviews convey a nonselective process. Those who accept offers after easy interviews are less satisfied with their jobs and exit the firm faster.
π Methods: We analyze ~500K interview reports from Glassdoor using LLMs to process text narratives, plus a randomized experiment.

Thrilled that our βInterviewsβ paper was accepted to UChicagoβs AI in Social Science Conference on Sep 25-26 π
We show that interview difficulty signals match quality, including future colleagues. Easy interviews lead to more rejections and faster turnover!
