"Wild-sea Holley by ye passage as you goe from portsmouth into Cornwall" collected by William Paine, 1737, from @cuherb.bsky.social. Now, this is in fact from Plymouth, and in modern parlance it is Eryngium campestre

It didn’t hang around for closer inspection. As these are β€˜male’ plants not sure how rewarding they are for visiting bees. πŸ€”

Very much id by 'where they always are'. Alan Leslie former VCR29 & author of Flora of Cambs showed me where to look. The drainage swale is 40x10m and male plants occupy large part of centre and flower very early. Females hiding up one end fight their was through ivy but eventually much taller.

Interesting. There’s a patch near home in Cambridge with no signs yet but the extent of the plant in Bury is so wide there’s always a chance of a few early flowers.

Under Blackthorn & Alexanders (hence illumination with phone torch) here's Grape-hyacinth, Muscari neglectum, in the spot described by Prof Henslow in 1828 as 'under a hedge on the side of the hill between Hinton & the Gogs' (see ALT).

Another, lower, rectangular table stands along the side wall with smaller pot plants on top. Between the three small tables stand two large, sculptures on white plinths.
