How we are silent on the Epstein case is one of the most depressing testaments to our loss of integrity in global health. Everyone (or at least all Gates partners) is indirectly implicated, and self-accountability and responsibility is below zero. Shame on us.
I wasn’t involved in WHO at the time, but saw through my G7 work what happened in the response. I was also personally targeted for several months by (renowned newspaper) investigative journalists for comments.
When WHO went through sexual harrassment and rape scandals (which were handled far from best-practice), many donors halted funding and the reputation of WHO was pulled through the thickest mud. Why the silence now around Epstein, #globalhealth donors and leaders? 1/3
History will judge our generation of leaders and us as citizens. What memories and monuments of horror will we leave behind?

What I’ve been asking myself is why the “rest of us” – normal citizens – stay silent.
What happened to civic space?
What happened to community voice?
What happened to mobilization?
What happened to the power of a pen against a gun or one voice in dark silence?
When did we all give up?
There is a huge void in principled leadership. Who is left to speak out & to inspire? Who hasn’t caved in? Who still has a spine? The list of politicians, media companies, tech & law firms, foundations – even civil society organizations – is getting very, very thin on sticking to principles.
