It stopping a lot of thrusts was impressive as well, but I wonder if the wobbly stand contributed a lot to that?
Also the evidence for leather armor is not that limited, recipes for making it, mentions of use in writing, and even surviving examples are not that uncommon.

16th century leather (actually rawhide probably) haramaki and 13th century iron and rawhide o-yoroi.
I think he didn't nail the method as it's a little too brittle, but it is still pretty strong.
I am actually surprised such soft leather protected so well (against cuts). Unsurprisingly though it performed worse against blunt impact, which a harder helmet would protect better against. Tod's Workshop made a video with hardened half tanned leather which was much stiffer and would perform better
