hi hi, myself and @pumodi.bsky.social are presenting at GDC this year! Our talk, Mics in Space The Importance of Field and Foley Recordings, is kicking off the audio track Wednesday morning 10:30AM! If you’re tired of staring at a computer screen all day, then this will the talk for you!
It is inevitable that as data sets grew tall, abstraction layers obscured, that humans need novelty to parse such quantities of information. but the death of understanding and feeling art, of wanting to grasp, to sing, and paint is so entrenched in this entitlement.
Perhaps the music at cirque would sound even more thrilling, more novel if it didn’t have to rely on ghostly samples. but the composition of those samples remains the same, the performances preserved in amber while humans still perform its most fundamental and human driven elements
All of this to say: when I watch an AI generated video, I feel nothing. The machine can create all sorts of surreal imagery from the most pedestrian prompts, and as the photons dance across the eyes, it lacks all of the pathos, the yearning, the texture, the risks that I felt at Cirque.
Alongside him, the music director and drummer would trigger a sampler playing back stems and loops of a forgotten orchestra from the shows original pit. Across the massive chasm, the current pit consisting of 8 additional band members stand in plexiglass high above the proscenium
My friend Carlos and I climbed up to the rafters to look at the speaker array; at one time the largest collection of subwoofers on the strip and an audio engineering marvel in 1993. We checked out his percussion rig, a blend of world instruments still performed live to match the dancers.
Went to Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere last year and haven’t stopped thinking about it. It’s Cirque’s longest running show and so much of the technology, set pieces, and talent has changed since its premiere in 93. Yet it retains a sense of wonder: human stakes give the performance meaning

These ladies all talk like my mom and her friends. It’s real endearing and their accent is so pronounced! I couldn’t distinct it for years until I moved to Manhattan Chinatown where most folks are from the mainland
had a real bright moment today in Boston when I realized the restaurant I was in had Taiwanese staff and could understand my Taiwanese-American accented Mandarin. They even offered to charge my phone once I started chatting 🥰

i just got my license less than a year ago having never driven nor needed a car having lived in New York for 12 years prior. It’s very surreal to feel teenage agency lensed through my 30’s.
So funny getting formative car experiences at age 33. My friends are like "🙄yeah pretty cool huh?”. Meanwhile i'm weeping behind my sunglasses with the windows down, wind in my hair, sunrise in the rearview, sundress flapping, driving to my childhood home. “It’s so beatiful 😭”
Foley is sonic cosplay. You break down the textures, clothing, props, and performance of the character: and then portray them in the world or the story. I say “weaponized asmr” to describe the effect of Foley but in the craft, we are sonically dressing the character. And then, walking the runway.

visited Insomniac Games earlier this week and had an absolute blast presenting some cool Foley concepts to the audio and design teams!! can’t wait to come back soon :))
got to visit the Fox Lot and One Step Up, one of the best Foley studios in the world. I also somehow ended up leaving the gift shop with a Simpsons production cell
every few months, i get a small burst of new followers on instagram or bluesky and i’ve realized, “somewhere, a sound design professor just started a section on Foley and played back the Wired Video or 32 Sounds to their students”
