REVIEW: “Slanted” (2026) The very concept of “Slanted” put the film in a precarious position from the very start. It's a deeply personal message movie that doubles as a bonkers social satire and triples as body horror chiller. It's certainly an ambitious undertaking for writer-director Amy Wang who draws inspiration from her own life experiences and finds catharsis in exploring genres. Unfortunately she struggles to find the right balance, leaving "Slanted" to only go skin deep.

REVIEW: “Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead” (2026) Frequent readers of this site have probably heard me talk about growing up on the genre-blending adventure movies of the 1980s. Whether it was science-fiction fantasy or classic sword-and-sorcery, if it was on the television I was watching it. And while some haven't aged as well as others, I still hold those movies in high regard. Perhaps that's why I get a little giddy whenever I see modern filmmakers tipping their hats to those nearly forgotten genre gems.

First Glance: “In the Grey” Guy Ritchie’s latest star-studded action-adventure cocktail is “In the Grey”, a film that has the same energy as the director's 2024 film “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”. At least that’s the impression we get from its first trailer that just released yesterday. It’s a rip-roaring first look that shows off a nice cast, some good laughs, and (of course) plenty of action.

REVIEW: “Bodycam” (2026) The found-footage craze ran its course with me some time ago. But credit to director Brandon Christensen for finding a fresh and clever use of it in his new horror film "Bodycam". As its rather obvious title reveals, the film tells its entire story through the bodycams of two police officers, with some occasional shots coming from the dashcam of their patrol car.

REVIEW: “War Machine” (2026) Maybe it’s just me, but movies like “War Machine” don’t seem to come around very often these days. There has never been a notable shortage of genre films in movie theaters, direct to video store shelves, and now via streaming. But rarely are we treated to movies from the cool military sci-fi sub-genre. I’m talking about movies in the vein of “Predator”, “Starship Troopers”, or even the lesser yet underappreciated “Battle: Los Angeles”.

REVIEW: “The Bluff” (2026) It was only a few weeks ago that Prime Video released "The Wrecking Crew", a straight-to-streaming action comedy that seemed custom made for theaters. Now a month later they've released another streaming feature that I imagine would have played extremely well on the big screen. While it’s a bummer for those of us who love that experience, the movies look to be big successes on their platforms meaning this trend is likely to continue.

New on Home Video: “The Patriot” Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Steelbook Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is bringing "The Patriot" to home video in an exciting new limited edition steelbook. Originally released in 2000, "The Patriot" remains an absorbing and entertaining Revolutionary War epic directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Mel Gibson as conflicted veteran Benjamin Martin. It also features a great turn by a young Heath Ledger, the always dependable Tom Wilkinson, and a deliciously vile villain role for Jason Isaacs.

REVIEW: “Dreams” (2026) Michel Franco has never been one to shy away from challenging his audiences with provocative subject matter. He attempts it again with his latest film, “Dreams”, a strangely confounding psychodrama that seems to have several things it wants to say but no firm grasp on how to say them. It's cold, sometimes aimless, and borderline absurd at times in its attempts to find a steady pulse.

EDFF 2026 REVIEW: “Honeyjoon” One of big treats of the 2026 El Dorado Film Festival was the screening of writer-director Lilian T. Mehrel's "Honeyjoon". This emotionally rich, life-affirming dramedy had its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. Now as it continues to make its way along the festival circuit, more people are getting to experience this impressive feature debut from a filmmaker with a number of compelling interests on her mind.

REVIEW: “Scream 7” (2026) Back in 2026 the slasher sub-genre got a jolt of fresh energy in the form of Wes Craven's "Scream". Horror fans immediately responded to the movie's overt meta treatment that embraced the long-standing slasher clichés both within the film and in the filmmaking. In many ways it revitalized the genre and inspired a new wave of imitators. "Scream" immediately spawned a well-done sequel followed by two considerably lesser films.

REVIEW: “The Dreadful” (2026) Writer-director Natasha Kermani delves into the dark depths of gothic horror with “The Dreadful”, a slow-burning semi-supernatural chiller covered in medieval blood and grime. The story is set in the 15th century as a battle for control of the English throne rages during the Wars of the Roses. It's a fittingly grim setting for Kermani to play in. But she struggles to sustain any momentum in this surprisingly dull gothic folktale.

First Glance: “Pressure” (2026) One of this year’s surprise early releases (at least for me) is “Pressure”, a historical war film from director Anthony Maras that recently dropped its first trailer. The feature is based on playwright David Haig’s 2014 stage production that was inspired by the true events leading up to the D-Day invasion. An intriguing cast led by Brendan Fraser, Andrew Scott, Kerry Condon, Damian Lewis, and Chris Messina anchor what looks to be a riveting true story.

REVIEW: “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” (2025) Quentin Tarantino originally conceived, wrote, and produced Kill Bill as one single film. But marketing an over four-hour movie concerned his producers. So Tarantino and Miramax compromised, deciding to divide the film into two feature-length volumes to be released six months apart. The acclaimed director wouldn't have to cut major scenes and the producers could release two movies in an effort to maximize profits.

REVIEW: “The Mortuary Assistant” (2026) "The Mortuary Assistant" attempts to follow in the footsteps of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and more recently "Iron Lung" by adapting a small indie horror video game to the big screen. REVIEW: “The Wrecking Crew” (2026) As a kid from the 1980s, I have an undeniable soft spot for meathead action movies and buddy comedies. The 80s gave us plenty of them, sometimes in a single film. From more highly regarded features like “Lethal Weapon”, “48 Hours”, and "Midnight Run" to more forgotten flicks like “Tango & Cash”, “Red Heat”, and “The Last Boy Scout”. I admit, their quality may vary.

First Glance: “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” It’s hard to believe we’re getting another Mummy movie. To be clear, this isn’t a part to the Brendan Fraser action-adventure franchise that’s rumored to be getting a sequel. Nor is it connected in any way to the 2017 film that was meant to jump-start Universal’s since cancelled Dark Universe. Instead, 2026’s film is entirely its own thing. Titled “Lee Cronin's The Mummy” (to clearly differentiate itself, I’m sure), this is intended to be a new supernatural reimagining.

REVIEW: “Hellfire” (2026) When not playing a key role in the box office shattering Avatar film series, Stephen Lang is still making a variety of modest independent movies. His latest is “Hellfire”, a small town action thriller that tells a familiar story in a familiar setting about familiar characters facing a familiar dilemma. But Lang makes anything watchable. And supporting turns from Harvey Keitel and Dolph Lundgren add to the fun.

REVIEW: “Crime 101” (2026) There’s a throwback quality to writer-director Bart Layton’s “Crime 101” that you start to notice in its earliest moments. It’s hard to avoid comparisons to Michael Mann classics like “Thief” and “Heat” or Willian Friedkin’s “To Live and Die in L.A”. You can even see the DNA of some the great paranoia thrillers of the 1970s. Layton’s movie may not reach those lofty heights, but you can feel the pulse of those crime genre gems racing all through his latest.

REVIEW: “Wuthering Heights” (2026) Emerald Fennell follows the empty shock value and cheap psychosexual spectacle of her previous film, "Saltburn" with an overheated and underdeveloped reimagining of a literary classic. Fennell’s new spin on “Wuthering Heights” is more in love with itself than with anything Emily Brontë put to page in her highly regarded 1847 novel. Sadly, it results in a surprisingly hollow and frustratingly scattershot exercise in overindulgence.

REVIEW: “Diabolic” (2026) Director Daniel J. Phillips takes us into the unsettling world of religious horror with "Diabolic". It’s a well-traveled subgenre that has been approached from nearly every angle imaginable. Yet when done right, filmmakers have shown that there are still some good frights to be found, even if we’re in well-travelled territory. Sadly, that isn’t the case with the underwhelming “Diabolic”.
