So proud to be a part of SPMA. This Feb we will be sharing stories and exhibitions that highlight LGBTQ+ histories from the post-medieval period.

A sign at the women's bathroom in Manchester Airport T2 apologising for the inconvenience that male and female staff clean the bathrooms.
Help! Who is going to protect the women from the male bathroom cleaners!? Where is JK Rowling and her lawsuits when you need her π±π±π±
Miraculously I still have 10 fig seedlings from my experiment, including the 1 grown from a dried fig seed. They have started to smell of fig, which is amazing, so finally potted them out. Not sure what to do with 10 fig trees if they all survive ... experimental archaeology gone wild π
This is absolutely disgusting yet utterly predicted by everyone who shouted loudly that violence in Gaza has been about ethnic cleansing & invasion, not 'stopping Hamas'. This is exactly how communities are pushed to support violent extremists, a last resort as the only way to fight back.
The remnants of the coffee break table with plates of Portuguese savory snacks, cakes, biscuits and a plate of fig roll biscuits.
Hanna introducing the article from the Guardian newspaper that kicked off their curiosity about where and when the fig trees on the River Don came from. Historic aircraft are in the background as the session takes place in the maritime museum exhibition hall
Great fun bringing my research with Milica RajiΔ on the truths about the fig trees growing in Sheffield on the River Don. Introduced the international audience to the wonders of British fig roll biscuits too. A bit more work to do on early pre-Industrial fig trees in Sheffield before publication.

Obsessed (and slightly distracted) by the beautiful building hosting our sessions in the Archaeology Museum in Lisbon.
Day 2 of @postmedarch.bsky.social conference in Lisbon, hosted by the wonderful Maritime and Archaeology museums. Our maritime session starts the day in the maritime museum exhibition hall. Speakers themselves becoming exhibits amongst the boats for passing tours!
Ugh! I am SO fed up with people hassling me for stuff day/weeks before deadlines!!!
Deadline are 'do by' dates. They will be done. And students, do not submit at the deadline and expect me to return it before the deadline for feedback.
Stop hassling meeeeeeee!!!!!!!
Is this an adhd thing?

Our fifth & final post for #LGBTQ+HistoryMonth comes from our current President, Dr Hanna Steyne Chamberlin (@hlsteyne.bsky.social). The post is based on Hanna's PhD thesis (The University of Manchester) - The construction of the Thames Embankments in #London in the mid-late 19th century changed 1/7
Strange the Serbian student protests aren't being more widely discussed in the UK/English language press. Wonder why that is ...

Did you know that registration for #PMAC25 is open until March 20?
Ps. Donβt forget presenters need to register as well!
Pps. If you forgot to add add-ons initially, based on availability, you can add these to your order until March 20 as well 1/2
Delighted to kick off our #LGBTQ+historymonth series with a sneak peek of a review of the fabulous Hollis Croft comic by Mili Rajic, my favourite pieces of post-med/historical archaeology work. πΊ
So. Much. Fun
Spend the day at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet with the blacksmith making a knife Crocodile Dundee would be proud of. Started with a rectangle of high carbon steel. Hit it a lot. Ground it a lot. Hard work. Wrists are a bit wrecked. But absolutely brilliant! And it is gorgeous.
I am delighted to share that the SPMA is celebrating #LGBTQHistoryMonth with a series of features on LGBTQ+ post-medieval archaeological research being carried out by our members & trustees.
This is frightening to see and puts archaeology and heritage studies firmly in the firing line.
This week my employer of 17 years English Heritage announced 200 jobs lost, and my Alma mater Cardiff Uni announced 400 jobs lost. The planning system that protects our heritage and provides thousands of archaeology jobs is at risk, and Higher Education is in free fall more generally #ThisIsFine
A collection of frosty leaves on the ground
A view of a load of young snowdrops in the grass with sunshine on them.
Frosts and snowdrops at Manchester Uni. Welcome to Semester 2, back to teaching, kicked off with a lovely chatty group of 1st year archaeology students.
One day I won't be doing the last of my marking at 11pm the night before the deadline. Tonight is not that day, sadly.
Fuelled by sugar and chocolate.
Water flows through the lock gates at Lock 87 of the Manchester canal next to Canal St, with flower planters with the Pride flag on, and the club G-A-Y in the background.
Yeah, I could be in a Monday morning work meeting, or I could be enjoying a walk along Manchester's queer canal on my way to a day long tattoo appointment.

Hi! I am back after 3 weeks ill in bed, so a belated happy Christmas, Hanukkah, & new year! I was gutted to miss SHA in New Orleans, but really not well enough to travel. My long Covid has been reactivated, so I'll be easing back to work, life, & exercise. Will keep you posted.
Yes - you spotted it, we are now on Bsky! We will be sharing all of our news and posts to this account so drop us a follow if #postmedievalarchaeology or #historicalarchaeology is for you!

Superb end to @tag45.bsky.social with the SPMA Geoff Egan Memorial lecture given by @lauramca.bsky.social on the materiality of the North of Ireland Troubles. Thank you @bournemouthuni.bsky.social for a super TAG!
Day 3 @tag45.bsky.social starting, appropriately after the TAG party with the archaeology of cosiness. Kate & Emma in pyjamas asking can we make academic conferences cosy?
Day 2 repeopling submerged palaeolandscapes @tag45.bsky.social showcased work by Wessex Archaeology staff. Two on fine grained data to repeopling at La Cotte de St Brelade & Area 240. My paper was the opposite starting with First Nations Australians but with no real 'archaeological data' yet.
Katy Whitaker at the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology tabe at TAG. We have pens and photo scale card, plus information about our PhD group & membership
Sunday will round off @tag45.bsky.social with the SPMA annual Geoff Egan Memorial lecture, by Professor Laura McAtackney 'The potentials and limits of conducting archaeologies of the Northern Ireland Troubles and peace process: reflections over 20 years.' We have a table, come say hi!
Day 2 of @tag45.bsky.social I'm presenting on 'repeopling' submerged palaeolandscapes in Australia. I will miss @drclaireharris.bsky.social & @laraband.bsky.social talk on a 'more than human Thames'. My thoughts on that & rivers as assemblages are in Ch4 of my PhD tinyurl.com/OneFootInThe...
Hanna stands to the right of a screen whilst talking. The screen shoes a part of a jigsaw puzzle made up of archaeological data types, images of traditionally marginalised & excluded people, blanks, and artwork of Hollis Croft
Today @tag45.bsky.social I presented with Mili RajiΔ on story telling as archaeological method, based my PhD & her superb Hollis Croft comic. We use the gaps between & beyond 'data' as spaces to explore the marginalised, excluded, & othered people overlooked in narratives of the past.
Teaching has ended for 2024 which means the annual academic archaeological pilgrimage down to @tag45.bsky.social begins! 5hrs on a train to Bournemouth.

Hanna introducing their talk
Great day at Burlington House, this time @geolsoc.bsky.social with the pleasure (I think) of rounding out the Energy Group Ground Modelling for Offshore Wind conference with a look at the challenges and opportunites for incredible work in Australia with First Nations on submerged palaeolandscapes.
