Two wooden doors with ornate curling iron designs flanking an arched doorway looking out onto a street showing a blue fronted shop at the bottom of a 4 storey building. Sunlight is streaming in the doorway, lighting up the right hand door and leaving the left in shadow. This is the main entrance to St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney, founded when Orkney was still part of a Norse Earldom
For #Adoorable Thursday this is

Very sad & concerned to see this. In my 6yrs at #SkaraBrae #Orkney I had many experiences of customers using the #VisitScotland iCentre as a gateway to the islands. Visitor numbers have increased dramatically & tourist season is longer but the infrastructure to manage that isn't being matched.

Very grateful to Stirling University for hosting our annual Induction and Development event, and to Heather Price for organising a great line-up! A fabulous setting, in no way hindered by the fine (albeit chilly) weather.

Silhouettes of 12 standing stones highlighted against sunset skyline. Deep blues at top through pale blue to pale orange and yellow behind the stones. The stones are part of the 3rd largest stone circle in UK and thought to be Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age in date. Their function isn't known but it's suggested as a ritual or ceremonial meeting place with the stones possibly forming an astronomical calendar scheduling agricultural seasons. The ring is set within moorland on a raised mound on the Brodgar isthmus in Orkney, Scotland and overlooks two lochs (Stenness and Harray) and the recent excavations of a monumental Neolithic complex (around 40 buildings excavated more than 60 known to exist and geophysics suggesting many more)
