Tentatively planning on running #Chickam on the flock this weekend, weather permitting...
Still getting nighttime temps that are below freezing. Daylight hours warm enough to NOT kill my laptop are still short, so the hours we'd run it would be something like 10 or 11AM to about 4PM, PST.

I'll set eggs in the incubator May 1st or 2nd, aiming for a hatch date of May 23rd/24th! 🥚🐣🐓

Moose (2025 chick, Salmon Faverolle) has gone broody and is a TERROR. We've had a talk with her that she's a few months early with that BS.
Meanwhile, please admire her magnificent beard and noggin air brakes. 😁🐓

I keep planning to set out the camera on the flock...
Then it's either 100 billion gajillion degrees, or raining.

Also, we're trying to get video of Blazi running...her high-speed waddle is SO cute. 😁❤️

She is! She went out when we got baby chicks this year. Up to that point she'd spent the year in the brooder box in the house (spending days in the small run to learn about outside), getting as big and strong as we could get her.
She's doing great and is quite bossy. 😁❤️

I was thinking about running #Chickam on the flock this weekend...but it's still too hot to have the laptop outside and I don't want to fry it.
Instead, over the next day or so the kid and I will get some pictures of the flock and post them.

The chicks are doing great, the older ones hanging out with them, teaching them how to Outdoor Chicken.
Weirdly quiet in the house. This is the first day since June 7th, 2024 that there hasn't been at least *one* chicken inside! Blaziken was an indoor bird all last year because of her disability.

The youngest #Chickam chicks went out into the flock for good today, everything's going fine so far.
Their 2 month old pics were taken and will be up on my blog shortly!

The siz rooboys from last year were successfully rehomed to VERY good homes, but I'll post their grown-up pics, and get pics of the girls.

The kid and I will also take pics of the chicks in the next day or so, I'll post here when they go up on my blog.

In a few hours ALL the #Chickam chicks go out to the small run to get used to being outside. While they're out the cam will be off, back on when they come back in--which if it does the 100 degree thing again, might be 1-2PM. Otherwise they'll spend the day outside & come back in around 6PM.

The end is near...
Starting 7/18, the 8 young chicks go out into the small run days (coming back in if it gets too hot). The cam will be off while they're outside, back on when they come in for the afternoon/night.
Chickam ends around 7/31 when they go out into the flock for good.❤️

Pictures taken of the older chicks, they'll be up on my blog later. The older chicks (except Huntress and Enzyme, who will get another 2 weeks in the small run) go out into the flock for good tonight, after a wing trim. #Chickam

The older chicks go out into the flock in a week and need to get used to dark nights--this will be their first night in full darkness, so there may be some distressed yelling. They're OK :)
And it's plenty warm enough at night, the littles no longer need a heat lamp.

The juniors will come back in at night, in 2 weeks they'll be old enough to get booted outside for good. Huntress and Enzyme are two weeks younger, so they'll stay with the littles until they reach 8 weeks of age, around July 23rd.
I'm gonna raise the camera a bit, up to the edge of the box.

Starting tomorrow, the oldest #Chickam chicks will be spending the daylight hours out in our small run. This gives my existing flock and the junior chicks a chance to SAFELY get to know each other, without my hens putting the beat-down on them.
