For years on my old blog I published the names of servicemembers who died in Iraq & Afghanistan. No other outlets were.

These are the first 4 Americans to die in the Iran War.
Capt. Cody A. Khork, 35
Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42
Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39
Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldnโ€™t be in power โ€” not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.

The moral position would be to not hold the World Cup in the U.S. at this point. But the moral position would also have been to not have Russia or Qatar host. FIFA doesnโ€™t care and has never really cared.

But I do think we should be ready for things to go sideways this summer

An infographic from the Global Carbon Project displays three pie charts illustrating the remaining carbon budget for different global warming thresholds (1.5ยฐC, 1.7ยฐC, and 2.0ยฐC) with a 50% likelihood. Each chart features a large dark gray circle representing 2,770 gigatonnes of CO2 already consumed, paired with a smaller orange wedge representing the remaining budget. As the temperature threshold increases, the orange "remaining" wedge grows significantly: it is a narrow sliver of 170ย GtCO2 for 1.5ยฐC, a moderate slice of 525ย GtCO2 for 1.7ยฐC, and a large segment of 1,055ย GtCO2 for 2.0ยฐC. The visual contrast highlights how little of the global carbon budget remains to stay within the most ambitious climate goals compared to the vast amount already emitted.

Happy #PiDay!

Here are some pies to consider: If nothing changes, the remaining carbon budget to stay under 1.5ยฐC, 1.7ยฐC, and 2ยฐC will be used up in 4, 12, and 25 years, respectively. Letโ€™s eat up by setting all the fossil fuels on fire.

There's a hauntingly beautiful irony in these morons thinking that carefully crafted American hegemony was actually weak and woke, and they would be the ones who would do Power and Dominance properly, and immediately bringing everything crashing down

social media was a mistake, you are not supposed to be in touch with & constantly exposed to the emotional whims of literally everyone you've ever met. the synapses that are designed to facilitate our human interactions are simply not built for this b.s.; I believe this 100% unironically.

Who can get through to Van Hollen about this?

This won't stop until Democrats start pushing back by telling Pentagon officials and senior military leaders that war crimes committed during this administration will be prosecuted during the next administration.

10/ All of this was totally foreseeable. Frankly, itโ€™s why previous presidents werenโ€™t so stupid to start a war like this.

Trump has lost control of the war. His best course now is to cut his losses and end it. Thatโ€™s the only way to prevent an even bigger disaster.

Agree overall, and this got me thinking. Who do we think was the best USFP president since FDR?

My initial thought is it comes down to GHWB, Clinton, or Obama, all mixed records but overall fairly productive. Ford was such an interregnum it feels like he barely qualifies.

Americans donโ€™t really experience it this way, but I continue to see this war as essentially an autocoup, in that the President has claimed imperial power over war-making, which is expressly not given to him under the Constitution.

Opinion | The Justice Department Wants to Make It Safe for Government Lawyers to Lie

Too much to keep track of, but don't sleep on AG Bondi's new proposed rule that would let DOJ lawyers avoid key ethics checks that prohibit lying to court. Ratcheting up the assault on courts & the reality-based world at the same time. Mine in today's NYT. (Gift Link)

The additional cost of ONE fossil fuel price spike on the scale of 2022 = the ENTIRE COST of Net Zero by 2050. We get precisely nothing in return for the first cost, and a whole new, more secure and cheaper energy system from the second one.

Anyone who believes in, say, climate change had better understand that they also believe in much more infrastructure spending right nowโ€”and, yes, that will have to be NEW spending.

The US May Have to Answer for the Iranian School Bombing In the early hours of the Iran war, as Israel and the US began dropping their awe-inspiring ordnance, one barrage of American Tomahawk missiles apparently struck an elementary school, killing about 17...

".. this slaughter of innocents in Iran may expose the limits of [Trump's] style. It could even become what psychoanalysts call an 'encounter with the Real' โ€” a shock that cannot be subsumed into existing narratives .."

the main problem with popularism at all costs is that you will never win in a race to out-slopulist Republicans

they are ready and willing to rip all the wiring out of the walls; this strategy of promising to rip the wires out of only the garage walls is not sustainable

it's worth thinking about this as a kind of Nazi ideology: a belief that the country's military failures are a result of insufficient brutality rather than poor political decision-making

"We started a war of aggression for no reason & commenced it by accidentally bombing an elementary school & killing over 100 kids."

That simple fact is so horrific that it's just kind of bouncing on the surface of our collective consciousness. We can't absorb its full implications & significance.

In the run-up to his war, Trump ignored warnings that Iran could retaliate across the region and stop oil shipments, the NYT reports.

He downplayed risks as a short-term concern that shouldnโ€™t overshadow the mission to decapitate the regime.

Now the energy markets are in chaos.
