A look at the tumultuous life of 'Persepolis' as it turns 20 Marjane Satrapi's memoir has a history of garnering controversy β€” it's been on the ALA's list of most challenged books and continues to be the subject of debate about inclusion in school curriculums.

And here's a piece I wrote on Persepolis from a few years ago: www.npr.org/2023/08/17/1...

This tale of a Chicago school book ban was inspired by true events Librarian Jarrett Dapier's graphic novel tells a fictionalized account of real-life events in 2013 that restricted access to Marjane Satrapi's memoir Persepolis in Chicago Public Schools.

When the Chicago Public School System admins tried to ban Persepolis, students fought back. Up on @npr.org is my review of a graphic novel--WAKE NOW IN THE FIRE--a fictionalized version of real life events:

I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβ€”because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
