'Cello' comes from 'violoncello'. This Italian word has a funny literal meaning: "little big viola".
That's because it's a double derivative of 'viola':
viola > violone (big viola) > violoncello (little big viola).
The part '-cello' is only a suffix.
Here's more about it, 'violin', and 'fiddle':

Colour co-ordinated as always, Jenneke! Huge congrats again!

The @inmfl.bsky.social Project bagged its first award last night at Newcastle University in the category "Inclusive Education, Lifelong Learning & CPD"! This success goes in large part to many dedicated teachers who have co-created, piloted, and tested the materials developed on the project so far!
Lovely to see this recognition of our work on the @inmfl.bsky.social project! Language learning can be transformational, and we are proposing one way to realise that through the introduction of #linguistics in the school languages curriculum. #edusky #langsky
