This is no longer about saving the corner building. It's lost. All the SFRS can do is try to prevent what would be a catastrophic spread to Glasgow Central Station.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.
And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

'Kirkwall Fair.' (1888) Although Arthur Melville was not regarded as one of the Glasgow Boys, he was seen by them to be a kindred spirit. A year after painting this work on Orkney, he left Edinburgh and settled in London, although he often returned to Scotland to paint.
This is Bridge Street in Kirkwall. If anything, the view is foreshortened. Google Maps picture for comparison.

Still the best explanation of Russian tactics and the difficulty of deterrence.
From: Yes, Prime Minister.
He spoke: "As if the geysers of anger had spurted out of the ground unbidden and not as a result of politicians tampering with the fire hydrants." My @heraldscotland.bsky.social column on the asylum hotel protests. www.heraldscotland.com/politics/vie...
If an MP hears her constituents canβt afford a week in a hotel maybe she should focus on our wages and living standards rather than reassure them sheβs trying to stop anyone else getting a stay for free
Government style ad in watercolour. Image of a burglar stealing a painting from the wall of a home. Tagline: "It's not theft... if you say you're using it to train your AI algorithm". Body text: "Theft is now legal, so we can boost the economy by eliminating jobs. If that doesn't make any sense, ask a chatbot to explain it to you." HM government logo in the corner.

This is election year in Norway and anyone eligible to vote for the National or Sami Parliaments (Storting or sameting) can vote in person at the Consulate in Bridge Street. Contact us via www.leslieburgher.co.uk/norway and arrange to vote by the end of August to ensure that your vote is counted
Today at the Consulate we are flying the flag to celebrate St Olaf's Day. Norway's patron saint is commemorated by this statue in St Magnus Cathedral.
When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.
George Mackay Brown Peat Cutting And we left our beds in the dark And we drove a cart to the hill And we buried the jar of ale in the bog And our small blades glittered in the dayspring And we tore dark squares, thick pages From the Book of Fire And we spread them wet on the heather And horseflies, poisonous hooks, Stuck in our arms And we laid off our coats And our blades sank deep into water And the lord of the bog, the kestrel Paced round the sun And at noon we leaned on our tuskars β The cold unburied jar Touched, like a girl, a circle of burning mouths And the boy found a wild beesβ comb And his mouth was a sudden brightness And the kestrel fell And a lark flashed a needle across the west And we spread a thousand peats Between one summer star And the black chaos of fire at the earthβs centre.
And we left our beds in the dark
And we drove a cart to the hill
And we buried the jar of ale in the bog
And our small blades glittered in the dayspring
And we tore dark squares, thick pages
From the Book of Fireβ¦

Pianist Nikita Lukinov and Resol Strong Quartet in St Magnus Cathedral
Sunset over Deersound, Orkney
Fabulous start to St Magnus International Festival last night, with Nikita Lukinov and Resol String Quartet in the Cathedral. Then a drive home with the sun still an hour and a half from setting at 9pm. There's no better place to be than Orkney on a midsummer weekend.

Moment of zen on the beach last night at 10.45pm. The quid pro quo for those long winter nights at 59 degrees North.
Thanks Jo. They were just clearing up after Alta Acqua and I thought he summed up a kind of stoicism about it. Nobody was sitting down so I took a table, ordered a coffee and in minutes all the dry tables were taken.
Even though I daily drum for learning foreign languages (& with them about countries, customs, people, & history), we have, need, & use other ways to express ourselves. We think of communication as words, but it's so much more: gestures, pictures, music...
#GoodMorning, everyone.
Thanks Jo. I'm very proud of it and so pleased that you have given it an audience.
Can I turn off Gemini? I dont need or want it and it's rubbish.
