It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, Iโm not getting what I wantโIโm not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, โI know you werenโt happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldnโt have gone home if I had felt we werenโt getting it.โ And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, โYou find it difficult to be happy, donโt you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.โ And I said, โWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.โ He talked to me then about when he was making, I donโt know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, โI didnโt enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.โ And then he said, โYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, youโll have hours of happiness.โ
The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.
btw about that pixar thing, the reason why these people think having a conversation about gay people with kids is difficult is because they don't know a way to say to their kid "gay people are normal but you are not allowed to be one" without sounding like a bigot (there is a reason for that)
Wisconsin liberals have a chance next month to go up 5-2 on the state supreme court for the first time in modern history. If they succeed, they'll also block conservatives from earning a court majority through the next presidential election and until at least 2030.

just real quick...
we MUST win the Senate seat in Georgia and re-elect Jon Ossoff.
before anybody gets carried away with sending millions of dollars to Texas, let's please make sure we fund our "must win" candidates first.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction has been fighting me for months, trying to withhold data about its collaboration with ICE.
Yesterday, I won that fight, and obtained records showing that the state has transferred more than 2,000 people into ICE custody since 2009.

AND having a wholly logical wish to reject overcomplication on top of overcomplication being added to daily existence and not being so braindead that you donโt see right through that overcomplicationโs posturing as a sleek helpful simplification and that the only motive truly underlying it is greed.
Technocapitalistsโ great trick is to make people who hate all this bullshit feel like theyโre suffering from the same fogeys-not-coping-with-a-changing-world syndrome every generation succumbs to, rather than, say, just rejecting a rampant evil that seeks to rob us of our individuality and soul.
Shit like this is the botox and lip filler of photography, taking something wonderful and making it weird and artificial. It's not an improvement, it's not enhancement, it's digital vandalism. And it further erodes trust and melts brains, which is what gen-ai is designed to do.

๐"Zimbabwe has walked away from a proposed $350 million health funding agreement with the United States, after President Emmerson Mnangagwa personally directed his government to discontinue negotiations over what Harare describes as a one-sided deal that undermines the countryโs sovereignty."
When we talk about raptors, we donโt mean the dinosaurs! Raptors are birds of prey, meat eating birds adapted for hunting. In North America, this group includes eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, ospreys, and kites. #Raptors #BirdsOfPrey #DidYouKnow
Why would hydrogen given 13.7 billion years to fuck around and turn into new elements and then life, and then sentient life, just want to be a prompt-monkey?
I live for a brief moment, I want to actively and intentionally live!
The FCC just opened public comments on SpaceX's plan to launch a million satellites to do AI compute in space. Under the current proposal, an environmental review won't be required. Please consider submitting a public comment to oppose this damaging plan.

Today is February 15. On this day in 1879, President Rutherford Hayes signed a new law that would admit women as members of the Supreme Court bar & allow them to submit/argue cases. Thank suffragette Belva Lockwood for her efforts in this uphill battle.

you know, it still seems like it should be an even bigger issue that the president has been sending armed forces to kidnap and assault people in an ethnic cleansing campaign, with a specific geographic focus on regions that didn't vote for him in the last election
I've lost more than 5,000 subscribers (not paying ones, obviously - I'll never have that many paying ones!) since leaving Substack. In that time I've written as frequently, and - I believe - no less well. The problem is this: I left Substack & people are loyal to Substack. But I did the right thing.
we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
It took me a while to decide to write about this, because it seems so outlandish that I was sure there must be a mistake. But a body of evidence is starting to chip at my skepticism, so here goes:
How does this fox know where the mouse is?
Because the fox senses the earthโs magnetic field.

You think you can outsmart your brain, but you can't. If you do something ironically, you will end up doing it earnestly. This is good (exercise, diet, study) and bad (racism, bigotry, hatefulness). But you can't handle things at a remove. You are not a pilot in your head. You are your actions.
Last August, I ditched Substack, and decided to start sending out all my writing from my own website instead. It was a terrible decision, if we are talking in internet words like "growth" & "discoverability", but the correct one for me, and what I believe in. You can subscribe here: www.tom-cox.com
Surely it was felled, not fallen? (or is this one of those 'two peoples separated by a common language' situations)
Might there be a role in a future book, so that it won't lose clout amongst its tree friends? Especially since you're going to be such close neighbors and are likely to meet again.
