Abstract reads: This analysis contributes to our understanding of climate policymaking and regime resistance in an authoritarian state, focusing on Russia, as one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers. The analysis uses the multiple streams framework to examine the agenda and decision-making processes surrounding the 2021 Law on GHG Emissions. The case demonstrates how policy entrepreneurs within government were able to leverage international developments related to the Paris Agreement and get an ambitious policy proposal on the agenda. However, these efforts were met with strong resistance from fossil fuel incumbents during decision-making, who were able to undermine reform. This case provides a valuable window into the dynamic and contested nature of climate policymaking in an authoritarian regime, highlighting the importance of the international context in driving policy innovation in an authoritarian state...

We estimate the number of extinctions of Australian #invertebrates, plus the ongoing #extinction rate … Both figures are far higher than those currently recognised, pointing to alarming gaps in #conservation of an important area of #biodiversity

A β€˜doom loop’ of climate change and geopolitical instability is beginning Climate change is driving inflation and instability, which harms climate action. But it’s not too late to escape the doom loop.

"The case for tackling [climate] inequalities is often made in moral terms. But there is also another rationale. The failure to protect vulnerable communities ... may push them into the arms of nativist parties and other political forces that often seek to block climate action."

Feeding Grazing Cattle Seaweed Cuts Methane Emissions by Almost 40% Scientists find making a seaweed additive more accessible to grazing cattle would make cattle farming more sustainable while meeting global demand for meat.

University of California, Davis, found that feeding grazing beef cattle a seaweed supplement in pellet form reduced their methane emissions by almost 40% without affecting their health or weight.

On @antonygreenelec.bsky.social's numbers, the LNP needs about 51.5% 2PP to get to 'most seats'. On trend, it may get near to that, below. (YIK, rough-as-guts, and 2PP may now be a poor guide ... but so is small-sample seat polling.)

Removing carbon from the air: A climate cure or waste of money? β€’ Louisiana Illuminator President-elect Trump has vowed to slash climate spending under the Inflation Reduction Act, but direct air capture hubs are part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

β€œDirect Air Capture is an opportunity cost that increases CO2, air pollution, fossil mining, fossil infrastructure and social cost (energy+health+climate costs) by a factor of 10 vs using the same money to replace fossil sources with clean, renewable energy.”

If anger propels you, use this COP outcome to continue pushing for more action at home and through direct foreign policy.

If hope is what feeds you, recall that Mexico this week has set 2050 net zero target (last G20 member to have one), and Indonesia pledged to close all fossil fuel plants by 2040
