Two large prints of the cover art from the first and second book of the series Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. They are each more than three feet across. More description in the close ups of the individual prints.
The cover art by Michael Whelan of "The Dragonbone Chair" by Tad Williams. The frame is dark ribbed wood and the matting is a wintry grey-blue. The artwork is a single piece but designed such that the left and right look good by themselves as the left was the back cover of the book and the right was the front cover. On the right, teenage Simon is stepping out of ruins that still show much of their former glory. He's holding a wounded friend who is smaller but somewhat older looking. On the left a wolf runs through the ruins. The print is signed in the lower right.
The cover art by Michael Whelan of "The Stone of Farewell" by Tad Williams. The frame is dark ribbed wood and the matting is a wintry grey-blue. The artwork is a single piece but designed such that the left and right look good by themselves as the left was the back cover of the book and the right was the front cover. On the right, young adult Simon is standing in a snowy woods full of butterflies. He's holding a very large sword, a mirror and a white arrow. He now has a white lock in his hair. On the left, there is a lake at the bottom of a sharp drop. In the middle of the lake is a tall natural rock formation. The print is signed in the lower left.
These arrived today. Thanks to @michaelwhelan.bsky.social and @mrstad.bsky.social.

Sigh. It appears to be at the end of its option, & tho' we hear noise sometimes from erstwhile producers popping up & saying it's happening, I suspect it isn't. O well. I gotta say, both of us are ambivalent & neither of us want fame, so there's that. Money would be nice but we don't need #blessings

Obviously I knew that Tad Williams was an amazing writer. He's the guy who got me into fantasy when I was a kid. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a masterpiece.
But I'm reading his hard-boiled detective novel and it is so fucking clever. Flawless phrase after flawless phrase. I am in awe.

I'm reading Tad Williams' The Last King of Osten Ard series, which he's writing roughly 30 years after his famous Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. The original books are great, fairly luminous 1980s epic fantasy with great writing. The new ones are way darker and complex and I'm also enjoying them.
Tad Williamsβ Stone of Farewell book cover.
For now, as I linger in indecision over which Star Wars book will be my next companion, I wander deeper into the realm of Osten Ard. The trilogy unfolds like a vast and intricate tapestry, its pages demanding patience, yet gifting the reader with quiet, profound rewards.

I never see this come up, Otherworld by Tad Williams? One of my absolute favorites. Intense series but carries itself so perfectly.

I haven't read this since I was young but I've read it more than once and it didn't suffer. Intense to my limit I'd say so that β¦

I just finished Tad Williamsβ Otherland series. What a tremendous work of art from Williams, who is the best fantasy author you will read. Renie, Xabbu, Paul, Martine, Orlando and Sam β¦ some of the most well-developed, rich characters you will ever experience
5 out of 5 stars to The Witchwood Crown by Tad Williams. This is my first time reading any of the Osten Ard series by Williams and Iβm amazed at the depth of this world and the great range of characters. If you like Game of Thrones you should love this! #fantasy #fiction #books #williams #booksky
Wraparound dustjacket for STONE OF FAREWELL by Tad Williams, published by DAW Books
Background detail from STONE OF FAREWELL featuring the rocky peak rising out of the lake. Barely perceptible, a castle sits at the top. The shape of the stone implies an open hand in its gray outline. Evergreens line tiered ridges, arching low on the rock to suggest a bearded face.
Figure detail from STONE OF FAREWELL featuring Simon holding the smooth black blade while standing in the wintry woods. A kaleidoscope of butterflies burst through the woods behind him. He holds a mirror clutched to his chest and an arrow pointed up. His cloak and the sleeves showing beneath are simple and rough. Red hair sweeps across his forehead with the leading edge notably snow white. A long scar runs down his left cheek from temple to jaw, and a stern expression narrows his eyes as his lips are pressed shut.
