The technique I use to hand dye thread is essentially the same as “warp painting” which I learned at a handweaving class.

Before stiffening, what I do to block my pieces is just to steam them using a small travel steamer that works in both horizontal and vertical positions. Not a regular metal iron that gets hot. Usually I don’t pin anything out for blocking.
Sometimes I do brush a stiffening product on the back side only of my tatted jewelry pieces. I don’t put it on the front because it dulls the sheen of the thread and beads. I’ve tried several different brands of stiffener, my current fave is Plaid’s “Stiffy”.

I’ve only done a little bit of needle tatting, just to figure out the basics of it. I only wrote up one needle tatting pattern (the needle tatting version of “Trendy Teardrop”).
Mistake in first photo description: The plastic rings are 3 centimeters wide, not 3mm.

Jars of fiber reactive dye open in the colors I use for a batch of my hand dyed thread “Mardi Gras”. Many different shades of purple, green, and gold are blended to make the resulting thread colors richer. I always wear a face mask 😷 when working with open dye powder to avoid breathing in the chemicals.
