If you ever wonder whether UX professionals are still needed in an age of UI, there's definitely work to be done. Hopefully employers will recognize that.

None of these tools make any logical sense to use. Every UI is a nightmare of inconsistencies and confusion. (3/3)

the "practical" follow-up pointers all boil down to me doing the work myself.

The original suggested prompt will only work if my employer pays for a higher level of Copilot. So the absolute best-case scenario is Microsoft didn't test this with any users to realize that basic fact. (2/3)

I asked copilot: "Look through all my emails, chats and meetings and let me know what are the top 3 things I need to get done in the future."
Response:
"I get why you’d want thatβ€”that’s exactly the kind of thing a good assistant should do.
However, I need to be clear about a limitation first
I don’t have access to your emails, chats, calendar, or meetings unless you explicitly share that information with me.
I can’t see Outlook, Teams, Slack, Zoom, or other systems on my own.

I've been trying to make good-faith efforts to use AI in my work. Today outlook suggested asking Copilot to find priority tasks for me. I clicked that suggestion, and Copilot immediately told me it can't do that. (🧡)

Priced out a train from Raleigh to NYC: It takes 2x the time of driving, and costs 3x a flight. Time for my annual exasperation at the state of transit.

The core RB4 game is already gone from the store. And as older DLC ages out, one song at a time goes poof πŸ™

PSA: The music rights for many of Rock Band's songs are expiring, and DLC is slowly being delisted.

The game is still great, has genuine therapeutic impact on my anxiety, and is about 2/3 of the reason I'll keep buying any new Xbox they come up with.

It freed me up to do actual important work. And now I have the script for next time. I might be late to the party, but this is the first time AI was a net gain for me.

I still had to know that Powershell exists, and the vague kind of things it can do. My foundational knowledge of what scripting is and how it works was helpful too. But I'm not a software developer, I'm just good at googling how to put code together. And Gemini's better at that than I am.

Today I used AI to write a powershell script that saved me a few hours of boring manual point & click. It probably would have taken me that same few hours to write the script on my own. Gemini did it in a couple minutes, and improved on my original request. Sitting with this.

Shortly after the first set of explosions, Iranians received bursts of notifications on their phones, not from the government advising caution, but from a prayer timing app called β€˜BadeSaba Calendar’ which has been downloaded 5 million times from the Google Play Store.

The messages arrived in quick succession over a period of 30 minutes, starting with the phrase β€˜Help Has Arrived’ at 9:52 am Tehran time. No party has claimed responsibility for the hacks.

Our family's 2017 Dell desktop finally died, now looking for a solid basic replacement.

Not for gaming, mostly spreadsheets and word processing. Not a Mac family, don't want an all-in-one thing with its own monitor either - just a classic desktop tower.

What brands should I be looking at?

This is yet another permanent price increase to everything.

My car doesn't have a spare tire - it has a repair kit, with an air pump & can of sealant. I used it last weekend, and now I have to replace the can of sealant.

It's $80+, and only available on ebay. Oh, and without the canister the air pump can't even be a pump.

Why is everything dumb.

Protecting what remains: Introducing the UVA Archival AI Protocol | UVA Library

the University of Virginia Library's statement on Archives and AI is strong and clear, recognizing the utility of AI without being blind boosterism. I wish the world had more of this approach.

Text says "A measles vaccine analogy if you understand Dungeons & Dragons: Measles has a DC of 19 (you have an approximately 90% chance of getting measles if exposed and not vaccinated). The measles vaccine (MMR) would confer a +17 bonus to the average adventurer (CON 10), giving you a 95% chance to resist measles if you encounter the disease in your journey. (Two doses of the MMR vaccine actually = about 97% effective, but I’m told getting to 97% exactly in the game is more complicated than can be explained in a graphic.). In other words, the MMR vaccine is better than even very powerful magical items!” Beside the text is a picture of a cartoon baby dragon. The caption beneath the image is a caption that says "Definitely (absolutely not) an accurate representation of what the dragons look like. We didn’t want to accidentally choose a dragon that looks like a very bad one, and we made this graphic in like 5 minutes, so this one seemed safe."

Yesterday, someone made a Dungeons & Dragons analogy for vaccines in our (Facebook) comments. I don't play or understand D&D, so I asked our Preparedness Coordinator to explain. I still don’t understand it, but he said this analogy will be understood by people who do! Anyway, please get vaccinated.
