This isn't so much an endorsement of plex, and moreso a reminder that there ARE other options. And that having a personal collection that you can listen to when you want is fun and feels really good.
Honestly, the most exciting thing has been re-engaging with MY music. I have great taste! But also I have some terrible taste. And I have much broader interests (i.e. not-ska) than spotify would have you believe.
I continue to add to it via bandcamp, itunes downloads, and ripping cds (old and new).
Is it perfect? No. Lots of metadata issues. While plex is free, you need to pay to download to the remote device.
It's my music. My collection.
It works across devices. My phone, other computers, my roku.
Apropos of all the talk about spotify, or alternate options services. I use plex to access my own music library. That's free, no plan required, unlike video. My old iTunes library was intact. I have it on an old laptop at home that's on all the time, and I access it remotely with plex. 🧵
It would be a shame if my music got mixed up with some bigger artists’ material in the midst of all this pirating.
