John Nicholls (1662-1714) of Trereife's will stipulated that his widow Frances, born Foote, should not later be buried with him so ‘That after a toilsome and discontented life I may rest in peace and quiet.’ (modernised spelling). @lsangha.bsky.social

Oil painting titled Cornish Fisherfolk by Walter Langley depicting a rustic coastal village courtyard in Cornwall. A fisherwoman wearing a bonnet and apron stands on a cobblestone lane carrying a large wicker basket on her back, speaking with a seated fisherman in a cap who leans on a wooden stump beside a metal bucket. Nearby, a mother in a simple dress sits on stone steps holding a young girl on her lap. Behind them, a child peers from a half-open wooden doorway of a whitewashed cottage with slate roofs, narrow stone steps, and a small window box with red flowers. The scene shows the everyday life of a 19th-century Cornish fishing community, with textured brushwork, muted earthy tones, rural architecture, and a glimpse of green hills and blue sky in the background.

We’re delighted to share that Cornish Fisherfolk by Walter Langley has officially joined the permanent collection at Penlee House Gallery & Museum.

You can see it now on display in Gallery 5 at Penlee House as part of the Newlyn School collection.

Not much academic to draw on. James Whetter decades ago Uni Birmingham PhD and book 17th century economy Cornwall included tokens. 2 more recent 2022 and 2023 non-academic articles Penny Watts Russell in Trevitihick Society Journal Making money: Pascoe Grenfell, Matthew Boulton & the copper coinage.

As you may know many tokens in use in seventeenth and eighteenth century Cornwall (tin and later copper mining district).

Cats mind if a human mistakes them for a corner cushion and sits on them. All the back curls and stretches are sleeping gymnastics to keep their spine supple.

Yup Roderick Williams married Elizabeth at Marden Herefordshire in October 1737. Maiden surname may not have been Willoughby.

Great coastal hiking weather today sunny and cool and not too blowy. You have some of the loveliest sections north coast yet to do. Plus there are brilliant inland walks with hill top views both coasts - and lots of history and archaeology if that's your thing.

It was not effective prevention. Might ask whether reluctant to impede trade. There were more successful Excise prosecutions of Cornish merchants later and some caused bankruptcy / ceased trading (not long imprisonment). Severe penalties Georgians often exemplary and bringing to trial not routine.

William Veale of Trevaylor's journal 5 March 1787.
'Perran day. Dined at the hotel in Penzance at Wheal Growan first account.' With 16 men he named. The pride in Cornish identity, distinctiveness, and belonging has a long history. (To which later elements including faux tartan were added.)

Need the elastic section but can sometimes shorten by adding new hole for buckle and cutting long end off. Kaladin would likely enjoy playing with the cut offs!

Elizabeth Borlase reading Roman history in 1784. 'Mr Ferguson supposes (and perhaps very justly) that none of Caesar’s offers of peace and reconciliation were sincere. Because they were immediately followed by rapid movements and preparation for war.'

Who'd have thought that women reaching state pension age six years later might work for longer. Or that because cost of living increases some people in work might defer starting state pension even longer to get more later.

As a NA reader I can and do download wills free within notice acceptable use. I think NA should digitise records and not put online access behind commercial paywalls. As indie researcher want off site access all digitised records, think community access to Uni library resources should be offsite too

It’s #ManorialMonday! 🥳 We’re loving the detail on this beautiful cartouche from plans for the Manor of Penpoll, once owned by John Coryton. Recently cleaned + waiting for digitisation! Surveyor James Blackmore clearly had artistic flair. 💖
