Asked about sulphur- its a crucial nutrient for protein, enzyme, & vitamin synthesis. It promotes photosynthesis, enhances chlorophyll formation, & improves pest/disease resistance. Also acts as a soil acidifier, so good for camellias, azaleas etc. I'm not an expert- just what has worked for me!
Yes, epsom salts are really good for correcting magnesium deficiencies. Sulphur is a crucial nutrient for protein, enzyme, and vitamin synthesis. It promotes photosynthesis, enhances chlorophyll formation, and improves pest/disease resistance. It also acts as a soil acidifier, ideal for camellias.
A few people have asked about my camellia regime. I water throughout the year with a last good soak Sept/ Oct. Also give an ericaceous feed once a year. If yellow leaves or blossom drop problems, I make up a sulphur mix in a watering can & completely drench the foliage & soil. π± #GardensHour
They do like a bit of shelter but, but as they flower early in the year, we're often not prompted to water them throughout the season. My dad used to regularly water & give them a good last soak with ericaceous fertiliser end Sept. This has worked for me- lots of blooms which don't drop.
Ornithogallum umbellatum. Garden star of Bethlehem in full bloom. Very reliable returners which spread. π± #GardensHour
Eight years ago I nearly removed this camellia as it was in a sorry state (inherited when I moved in) Yellow leaves & a few blooms which dropped almost immediately. Tlc of sulphur washes & late September waterings & look at it now! #GardensHour π±
This well established clematis has wound its way up through the fig tree. Inherited so unsure of variety. π± #GardensHour
The Rhododendrons are starting to bloom π± #GardensHour
Lots of delicate cherry blossom. It has been a magnet for bees this week π± #GardensHour
Some pale frills signalling spring π±#GardensHour
As if by magic the wood anemone have appeared in the wildflower orchard #GardensHour
Afternoon all. Bright day here & my supervisor is taking his role very seriously ( give it 5 mins & heβll be snoozing). Hope youβre having a good start to your week π
Oh, I think I've got ear defenders in the big shed, good shout.
Thanks for the tip. I've got gloves, a visor & safety trousers, with my track record, I'm playing safe. My first project is to remove some big branches which are woven around some pillars.
Wishing all a happy #InternationalWomensDay2026
I've been trying to manage with a pole chainsaw for ages, but really needed something with more control. Bought it as a birthday present to me.
Time for a well earned brew π±
Morning all. Up early & got another coat of paint on the bathroom ceiling & walls. Now I can get on with something far more interesting, a bit of gardening. Might even test out my new chainsaw. The first bloom on amaryllis Red Peacock has opened. Have a super day everyone ππ±

First coat of emulsion on the walls, couldnβt face doing the ceiling. Still Iβve made a start.
Not in the last few days. As itβs breeding time Iβm really hoping heβs found a partner & concentrating on husband duties π€π»
This amaryllis is tantalisingly close to being fully in bloom. I think it will be worth the wait. π±
Morning all. Itβs a dull cloudy day here but these daffodils are bringing a pop of colour. Trying to work up some enthusiasm to start the bathroom decorating. Maybe Iβll just have another cup of tea. Have a super day everyone ππ±

Evening all. Busy Friday, singing Pink Pony Club at choir & work, then planning gardening jobs for the weekend. Really hoping for dry weather, otherwise Iβll have no excuse not to start decorating the upstairs bathroom. Floor is being tiled soon so I do have to get it painted π±
Wishing you good luck π
I'm in West Yorkshire, UK. I've had better luck with cuttings taken when the weather is really cold, and there is still regular ground frosts. Even though it is a very wet time of year, with some snow possible, they seem to do better than cuttings taken later in the year.
Anytime between March and May
Morning all. Light drizzle of rain currently but hopefully it will clear up later. The potential tenant is back in the bird box. Hopefully it will clock all the nearby nesting materials. Have a super day whatever youβre up to π
